Death of small-town America is greatly
exaggerated
Amid the onslaught of urban and suburban sprawl, the death of small-town
America has been greatly exaggerated, according to a Penn State researcher.
"When people care about each other and their community, the community per
sists in the face of enormous social, demographic and economic changes," says
A. E. Luloff, professor of rural sociology and agricultural economics. "Places
don't go away; the sense of community goes away." Basing his conclusions on a
study of six rural towns going back to the 19405, Luloff notes that a sense of
collective pride ,can be engendered by a variety of community events and cel
ebrations. The towns are Landaff, N.H.; El Cerrito, N.M.; Sublette, Kansas;
Lancaster; Irwin, Iowa; and Harmony, Ga. Read the full story at http://

Student becomes part of McKeesport
As the ribbon-cutting ceremony members assembled to officially open the new
Student Community Center at Penn State McKeesport last month, an unfamiliar
person moved into place between Penn State President Graham Spanier and
Curtiss E. Porter, campus executive officer. Poised with the oversized, gold
plated scissors in one hand and part of the ceremonial ribbon in the other hand,
the young man proceeded to make history on campus by functioning as the "of
ficial ribbon cutter" to the newest building at Penn State McKeesport. His name
is Charles Bisel, and he's the winner of a student essay contest that asked the
question, "What is your vision for the new Student Community Center?" Read

Racial-ethnic pride 'aiid academic
African-American fourth-graders with higher levels of racial-ethnic pride were
found in a recent study also to have higher academic achievement as measured
by reading and math grades in school and standardized tests, says a Penn State
researcher. Emilie Phillips Smith, associate professor of human development
and family studies, says, "The study contradicts the notion that 'racelessness' in
school children is necessary for success. We found that family, school and com
munity are all important factors related to children's healthy racial-ethnic atti
tudes and that these attitudes are correlated with their academic achievement."
Smith's and her co-authors' findings appear in a recent issue of theamerican
Journal of Community Psychology. Read the full story at http://live.psu.edu/

CORRECTION
The article "Rockin' the vote Behrend style" that ap
peared in the Nov. 7 issue misstated the event's name. "Rock the
