Student becomes part of McKeesport As the ribbon-cutting ceremony members assembled to officially open the new Student Community Center at Penn State McKeesport last month, an unfamiliar person moved into place between Penn State President Graham Spanier and Curtiss E. Porter, campus executive officer. Poised with the oversized, gold plated scissors in one hand and part of the ceremonial ribbon in the other hand, the young man proceeded to make history on campus by functioning as the "of ficial ribbon cutter" to the newest building at Penn State McKeesport. His name is Charles Bisel, and he's the winner of a student essay contest that asked the question, "What is your vision for the new Student Community Center?" Emilie Phillips Smith, associate professor of human development and family studies, says, "The study contradicts the notion that 'racelessness' in school children is necessary for success. We found that family, school and com munity are all important factors related to children's healthy racial-ethnic atti tudes and that these attitudes are correlated with their academic achievement." Smith's and her co-authors' findings appear in a recent issue of theamerican Journal of Community Psychology. Read the full story at http://live.psu.edu/ story/4394.
