Tami Quigley Psychology, 06 Evening of Dubious Taste celebrates bad writing by Erin McCarty news editor While loud parties, colorful beads, and greasy food were the order of the day for many members of the Behrend community on Mardi Gras, a contingent of literary-minded folks gathered in the Studio Theatre for a celebration of their own. The Evening of Dubious Taste is a yearly event showcasing some of the most poorly written or off-color material the contributors can find. After the presentations, everyone is encouraged to partake in some dubious food provided by the organizers. This year's evening kicked off with a reading by Dr. Greg Morris, which he titled "A Jewel Beyond Price. - "Most of us have probably had the experience of falling in love with a writer," said Morris. with exaggerated drama. "Well, that happened to me here." He went on to reveal that the poet he had discovered at this very event was Jewel Kilcher, and he proceeded to read some of her, least accomplished works, taken from her volume of poetry. Dr. James Kurre and his wife, Gail Kurre, both members of the Comedy Troupe In All Seriousness, were the only faculty members from outside the English department who participated. Gail Kurre regaled the audience with a song, to the tune of "If I Only Had a Brain," bemoaning the agony of extended constipation. James Kurre presented a list of dubious things that included Michael Jackson, commercials dealing with bodily functions, and singing cats. Dr. Brad Comann introduced his reading as an essay he had written for a history class as a freshman in high school. In actuality, it was a grossly skewered history of the world Internships available at Disney World by Erika Jarvis staff writer Along with midterms, research reports, group projects and all the study that comes with four years in college are the internships that help broaden majors. Ryan Trejo Business Managment, 06 containing assertions such as, "a myth is a female moth, - "Adam and Eve were created from an apple tree," and "Lincoln's mother died in infancy, and he was born in a log cabin he built with his own hands." Student presentations included a reading by Nicole Johns of a love letter written to her when she was 14; a reading by Susan Rhode from "Cosmic Banditos," a book adept at not getting to the point; and a recitation of "The Scotsman," a song seeking to answer the age-old question, "I wonder if it's true what they don't wear beneath the kilt?" The evening's most highly anticipated presentation was "Brush Up Your Shakespeare," a song from the musical "Kiss Me Kate." This was followed by Morris' traditional reading of "A Flash of the Knife, - a story that has been the culminating act in Dubious Taste since its inception. The purple prose was brought to the highest level of hilarity by Morris' masterful intonations. The evening ended with an array of generic food, of which the most dubious items were zebra cakes, cheese in a can, and Vienna sausages. For a slightly more sedate literary event, check out the fiction reading by Gary Lutz on March 27 at 7 p.m. in The best part about these internships is that they are year round. Fall internships last anywhere from June to January, and spring internships start around January and tend to end in August. Summer internships are also offered, yet college level courses are not offered during this time. Disney is recruiting on campuses across the country, including Erie. What do you need to do to get this amazing opportunity? First you need to go to www.WDWCollegeProgram.com and fill out the online application and print it out. Second, you need to go to the presentation closest to you. Walt Disney World is coming to the Mercyhurst College's Old Main on March 19 at 5 p.m. Attend the presentation and sign up for an interview time with the representatives. An interview will occur within 24 hours of the presentation. After that, sit tight and just wait. You will be notified within three weeks about your place in the program. Management, Ot; Irish American Club off to strong start by Courtney Straub staff write' Through the hard work of Brandi Hovis, Jenn Crawford, and Scott Soltis, the Irish American Club was formed last spring. This January, the club was able to join the Multi Cul tural Council. "The MCC was very glad to wel come us in," said Soltis, president of the Irish American Club. Mary Connerty, the advisor for the club, has many connections to Ireland. She visits Ireland as often as possible because she has family living over there. She once ran a marathon in Dublin and has done research for her hook in Ireland. "I was thrilled to be asked to be the advisor," said Connerty. The club meets every Wednesday at noon in the MCC suite. Being of Irish decent is not required for joining the club. "We are always actively looking for members." said Soltis. The first program for the club is a trip to Ireland over spring break. Ten students and three staff members are going. For the first three days of their trip, they will be in Castle Ward doing conservation work. Castle Ward was built in the 18 th century. The students are will help work on the gardens so they look as they did many years ago. For the last three days of the trip, the group will visit Dublin. Because the group is visiting Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, it will get to see, for itself, the tensions between the two regions.
