Despite the teams' hard work and preparation, the men fell to Baldwin Wallace, 8-1. "Most of it was first-match jitters. We made mistakes that we normally wouldn't make" said coach Jeff Barger. "Besides losing, we played a respectable match. We made them work." The teams only win came from sophomore Aaron Whiting and freshman Jonathan Barber at third doubles. "Jon and I played well at doubles; we hung in there and came away with a win But as a team we just weren't all there," said Whiting Along with Whiting and Barber's win came a well fought match from sopho more Ryan Deimel at first singles. After splitting the first two sets with his oppo nent, Diemel ended up losing in the third set. "He played a well-fought and entertaining match" said sophomore women's tennis player Christie Leininger, who attended Saturdays match. Despite the loss, the team still maintains its same goals for the season. "I still think we should be able to win our conference. We'll just have to learn from this loss," said Whiting. "We will need to work on confidence. Also the lower singles players, four, five and six will have to play up to their potential a little more" said Barger. The team will have time to improve while they take their Spring Break in Hilton Head, SC. Since the loss the team has been eager to take the trip and work hard. "Hilton Head gives us a good chance to bond. We'll be able to gain experience and improve now that we know what we need to work on" said Barber. While in Hilton Head the men will play matches against Emory and Henry, Lebanon Valley, Marywood, and Mt. Union. . "The trip gives us four matches to look forward to get a win, individually or as a team. I think we just need a win to get on a roll," said Barger. The team consensus is that it can't wait to get out of the horrible snow and hit the courts out in the sun "It should be a fun time. We can build team unity to become a stronger team for the season" said freshman John Marini. When the men return, they will play the first of their conferences matches at Behrend against Pitt-Greensburg on March 22. Westminster, Grove City, Washington & Jefferson, Bethany, Arcadia, Misercordia, Frostburg, Altoona and Behrend made up the nine teams that competed in the invitational. Out of the nine teams at Grove City the men placed fourth overall, but placed first in the AMCC Classic. "AMCC rules state that there must be five teams to make up a conference and so far there is only Frostburg, Altoona, and Behrend, so we've made up what we call the AMCC Classic," said Behrend swim coach Josh Heynes Youth prevailed for the men during the three-day competition. Once again, freshman diver Mike Sandretto cleaned up on the boards. Sandretto won both the 3 and 1-meter diving competition. "Mike has been doing an incredible job. Winning both events is a big step for a freshman," said Heynes. Freshman J.R. DeLorenzo placed second in the 2(X) backstroke and third in both the 100 backstroke and 2(X) IM. Freshman Carl Ward qualified for the ECAC meet in the 200 butterfly and took fourth in the meet for the event and fourth in the 100 butterfly. Veteran swimmer Ben Atkins was also an ECAC qualifier in the 1650 freestyle. Freshman teammate Jeff Howard quali fied in the 500 and 10(X) freestyle. The women struggled without the help of one of their top swimmers. Tara Braden. Braden Was allowed to swim during the morning trials, but was not cleared by the doctor for the night trials. "The doctor decided not to clear Tara for the night trials because of a serious migraine, which hurt because she brings in a lot of points," said Heynes. The women placed seventh out of the eight women's teams at Grove City, and placed third in the AMCC Classic. Although they lacked Braden, the women still swam hard. Sophomore Christine Williams placed seventh in the 100 and 200 backstroke. as well as the 500 freestyle. Williams also set new Behrend swim records in the 50, 100. 200 and 500 freestyle, 50 hack, and qualified for the ECAC meet. Sophomore Jana Bahnak qualified as well for ECAC meet in the 2(X) butter fly. Bahnak teamed up with Williams, Braden, and Carrianne Carstater to qualify for the 400-medley relay. Heynes attributes his teams' perfor mances to their training in Florida over 'the winter break. "The training we had in Florida really paid off for us.
