MMfe (M mm w “What’s Greek This Week" is coordinated by Adrienne Schermer & Guy Reschenthaler. with help from Rob Wynne —j a supplement to the Behrend Beacon • December 13, 2002 Theta pu , ™ Alpha Theta Phi Alpha has kept very busy this semester with various philanthropic, fund-raising and social events. We participated as a chapter in the Erie Marathon, the Juvenile Diabetes Walk and made Halloween cards for the children at Shriners Hospital. Pie-A-Theta Phi was held to raise money for the Eliot fund, which benefits the son of a Theta Phi Alpha alumna with cancer. High on the Hill presenting the Clarks with Tau Kappa Epsilon was a great success! Thanks again for everyone's involvement and cooperation! We have five newly initiated members and are looking forward to another great semester! A Continuous Battle By Douglas Smith Zeta Beta Tau concludes the fall semester having gone through many ups and downs. The organization is looking to capitalize on a new attitude into the spring semester and leave a mark on the community while doing it. It is one of the smaller fraternities on campus but that does not mean that quality of bonds and hard work is insufficient. The past semester really started in July for ZBT. A couple members attended the national conference that was held in Pittsburgh this year. In past years it has been held in Santa Barbara, CA as well as Evanston, IL and many other locations. This conference is an oppor tunity to talk to national staff about any problems or creative ideas, as well as bond with members of the fraternity from all over the country. Those who attend can get feedback from other members at different universities that can come in handy over the next year. The conference is held every summer. The semester would see changes in offices within the organization and many traditions still being carried out. Just recently Justin Frankert, winner of the Greek God from this fall’s Greek Week, took over as president. Plastics engineer Mike Pusateri will be his vice presi dent. The new leadership takes over to implement new ideas into the organization. Other offices within the organization changed hands, also. One tradition that was continued was the alumni weekend held every fall semester. Good times are had by all and the wealthy alumni usually pick up the food tabs for the weekend. One constant of this weekend is the alumni versus active football game. The actives captured victory for the second straight year. Two alumni suffered broken bones with a case of cracked ribs and a bad finger. The game usually does not get that physical, though. The alumni will be back next fall to try and recapture the crown. Highlights of events that will occur for Zeta Beta Tau next semester include the Greek Fair on Jan. 23. This will be a great opportunity to get to know all the Greek organizations. If you are interested in joining or getting know more about ZBT take the opportunity of our rush dates on Jan. 27 and 30. More information about the time and place will be out in the spring. Also the fraternity will be holding its yearly formal in March. This is a great time for alumni and actives to unite and relive old memories and create new ones. Also stay tuned for more information about the fraternity’s annual charity walk taking place the first weekend in April The fraternity walks in 4-hour shifts around Erie County approximately 106 miles to benefit the Second Harvest Food Bank and the Mercy Center for Women. This is one of the most uplifting events the fraternity completes every year. Remember for more information about anything mentioned in this article or to answer any questions, feel free to contact das323@psu.edu. The Zeta Beta Tau fraternity will be out in full force in the spring, looking for new recruits and we allow those people to retain their individuality. z bt The Guys in the Red Shirts We are the Delta Chi Behrend Chapter. It's been a great semester for our chapter starting with the great success of our freshman move-in. We will forever be known to the freshman parents as the "Guys in the Red Shirts." We've received numerous appraisals and compliments from both the parents and faculty alike for our support. We also received compliments from the city of Erie for our volunteer work along with the sisters of Theta Phi Alpha for handing out water at the annual Erie Marathon. Our fifth annual soccer tournament was a success with a strong turnout by both the student body and the Greeks (by the way, we apologize for the delay on the T-shirts for the winners. You will be contacted this week sometime). We also appreciate Sigma Tau Gamma letting us cater their annual Volleyball Tournament and hope to continue the support next year. Our rush efforts also played a great part in our chapter success this semester. Our two events, the Delta Chi Truck Pull and our sixth annual Pig Roast, were huge successes (minus the big dent on the truck bumper...sorry Steve.) We now have eight great associate members who will make eight outstanding brothers. Rush for next year is in planning and we have some great new ideas for the spring...so get ready Behrend. We'd also like to say farewell to our graduating senior and an outstanding brother, Michael Mattich. Mike is a fifth year senior graduating in the field of Mechanical Engineering Technology and has a job lined up in Pittsburgh working at US Steel. He'll be missed and we know that he'll contribute as much effort to the fraternity as an alumni as he did an active member. Farewell Mike. That's pretty much the semester in a nutshell. We'd like to say good luck on your finals to all of you and have a Happy Holiday Season. So see you next year. KDR and Eliot Two months ago Kappa Delta Rho was informed of a young boy in need. The name of this child was Eliot Wilpula. Eliot is the five-year-old son of a Theta Phi Alpha alumnus. Eliot's parents were told that he was diagnosed with a brain tumor and would need treatment and surgery for the tumor to be removed. Being a younger family, the Wilpula's could use all the help they could find. After Kappa Delta Rho found out about this tragic event, they decided they wanted to lend a hand in the effort. They set up a fundraiser that took place outside of Bruno's Cafe during lunch hours. A second location was set up in the Hammermill Center downstairs. The approach to the fundraiser was a penny raffle. Five hundred small envelopes were filled with slips of paper and numbered from $.Ol to $5. People who were interested would draw an envelope and pay the amount listed on the slip inside. Once the amount was paid, they were asked to write their name on the envelope and they would be entered into a raffle drawing for $250. After two weeks of fundraising we concluded the event. Although not all of the envelopes were sold, a total of $571 was raised in Elliot's name. The winner of the drawing was Aleah Rice. Although Kappa Delta Rho did not sell all of the envelopes as they hoped, a generous contribution was made toward Eliot and his family. This gift of money should lift some of the pressure during the holiday season. A banquet for Eliot was also held at Jimmy Z's on Oct. 12. Penn State Behrend Alumni gathered to meet old friends and help the Wilpula family at the same time. Kappa Delta Rho would like to thank all faculty, students, and any other contributor for helping with a good cause. Thank you also to the other Greek Organizations that participated in raising money for Eliot. We wish Eliot's family and all others a safe and enjoyable holiday season Fundraising dates are filling quickly, so call today!
