Alter a 14-13 record and a third place AMICC finish last season, the Lady Lions are looking to rebound and put themselves into the postseason after missing last year. The loss of seniors Katie Weigold, Erin Phillips, Katie Costanio. and Christine Charnock will he costly, but the return of senior guard Amanda Mauser and junior guard Erica Mozdy, as %veil as a eery strong recruiting class, will aid the Lady Lions. Highlighting the returnees are co-cap tains Mauser and Mozdy, who both saw significant time last year and bring ex perience and leadership to the team. "They have a great work ethic and lead by example," said Coach Fornari. "I am hoping for good things with these two leading the way." The Lady Lions should receive a huge boost from the freshmen The team brought in seven recruits and all bring something special to the hard wood. The freshmen consist of guards Nicole Pacinelli, Kristic Connelly, Danielle Freeburg, and Jennifer Yaworsky. as well as forwards Amanda 13 utta, Angela Pelligri no, and Shea Truhy. All have opportunities to see playing time early. "I see them as having the potential of being one of the top recruiting classes.'' said Fornari. "We have at least live players that will contribute right away and the rest have a lot of poten tial. I don't want to single any out be cause we arc lucky enough to have a solid group. I look forward to seeing their progress. - The Lady Lions scrimmage Oberlin College this Saturday and will probably have one or two more before they open the season in it's own tournament. "We are working hard. We have !nude a lot of improvements and still have a long way to go. We take it one day at a time. When you have a young team a lot of things come into play. Right now we are where we need to he," explained Fornari. "I look for many people on this team to contribute in their own way. This group can he a very special group. Going into the game on Saturday, the women knew that it was a key matchup in terms of the conference tournament. "This game is important because it decides who we may play in the con ference tournament, - said coach Dan Perritano I3oth teams knew the stakes were high and they played an extremely tight game. With three minutes left, the Li ons were ahead I-0 thanks to a goal from soplunnore Erin Maurer. At this point. though, Behrend's de fense totally fell apart. In the last three minutes, they gave up three unanswered coals. " We just had a mental breakdown and that took us out of the game, - said sophomore Carrie Smock. " We fell apart for a hule while at the end, - said sophomore Maria Gahagen. The final score ended up being 3-1 in favor of Frostburg. The defeat dropped Behrend's record to 8-10 overall, 4-2 in the AMCC. Though the game was disappointing, the women aren't Rio discouraged. "We hit a had patch, hut we can cer tainly recover from it," said Perritano. Smock said," I think we're only go ing to get better after this."
