On Oct. 3, the women went on the road to play a formidable Allegheny. While it was a hard fought contest, the Behrend squad was overpowered 0-1 by Allegheny's talent. "We just didn't play as good they did, they were a lot harder than we expected," said sophomore Maria Gahagen. Two days later, on Oct. 5, the Lions were still on the road playing a conference match against Pitt-Greensburg. Again, this was another tight contest. The Behrend team got one goal from freshman Heather Crawford, but it proved to not be enough. The team ended up being surprised by a well prepared Pitt- Greensburg team , Erin Maurer said, "I think we played just as well as they did." " We underestimated them," said Gahagen. "We need to start playing more as a team." With two straight losses, the team was well aware it needed to step up play and knew the next game was a good opportunity. "We play Lake Erie next and we definitely feel like we are the better team," Gahagen said. Lions clinch AMCC berth with by Dan Vidal Staff Writer The Behrend men's soccer team seems to have climbed out of its early season slump. It has been done at a very opportune time, as well. The Lions have really picked it up in the last two weeks. Ever since the first conference game against Pitt- Bradford they have played at the top of their game. The Lions' started conference play on a very high note, with a 3-0 victory against Pitt- Bradford. Goalkeeper Jake Hordych played a marvelous game with his second shutout of the season. Following that game was a thrill ing double overtime win at La Roche. The squad ended its three-game road trip with a tie and a loss to Grove City and Pitt-Greensburg re spectively. The Lions scored another conference win on Tuesday night over Lake Erie. With the victory the Lions cur rently stand at 3-1 in AMCC Con ference games . Tuesday night The team's play in that game showed their confidence was not in vain. In the first half, the Behrend squad assailed the stunned Lake Erie team with four goals. In the second half, Lake Erie still couldn't come up with any answers for the Lions' superior play. Behrend scored another four goals and rolled to a dominating victory. Holly Greiner led the way, scoring two goals. Also contributing to the score were freshmen Jill Vroman, Amanda Charney, Michelle Newland, and Heather Crawford. The sophomore scorers were Maurer and Jen Baker. After the game coach Dan Perritano was very pleased with the team's performance. "They really took care of good opportunities and that's why we scored so many goals," he said. The women also couldn't complain about their level of play. "We communicated really well and did a good job finishing," Maurer said. Looking ahead, the Lions have an out of-conference match up against Bethany on Saturday that should be an exciting contest. "The Bethany game should be a good game from start to finish," said Perritano. Even further ahead, the AMCC tournament is coming up at the beginning of November. Behrend still has a few conference games that will have implications for the conference tournament. "We're getting close to the tournament. We have two more conference opponents. Behrend bounced back from their loss on Saturday to Grove City with yet another Conference win. With the tre mendous victory over this conference opponent the Lions clinched a play off birth as well. The Lions played their best game all year with a 6-0 shutout over. Lake Erie. Hordych put out another great per formance with his third shutout of the season "This game was much bigger than many people thought because it a clinched a playoff spot for us," said Hordych. "Mark (Cipriani) and (Andy Laver) both have great scor ing power and this game was just a big confidence booster." The Lions have improved to 3-1-1 in their last five games and have re ally found themselves. Conference play was either going to "make" or break" the Lions' season. It seems as though they have turned it up down the stretch. "We feel almost like we have a sec ond chance, or as if we are starting a new season with these conference games," said junior midfielder La- One of whom, Frostburg, could decide who and where we may play in the semifinals andfinals." With the tournament looming large, the women feel that they ver, who has been a vital part of the team turn-around. The Lions (4-7-3, 3-1-0) have now scored 13 goals in the four confer ence games they have played as op posed to a dreadful seven goals in 10 non-AMCC games. However, they have just two con ference games remaining, 0ct.19 against Penn State Altoona and Oct. 26 at Frostburg. The high-flying Lions have made the playoffs, but their next goal is to gain home-field advantage. Laver, along with the rest of his teammates, believe this is important. "We've had a lot of support this year at home and the fans have been great and I think we will be tough to beat if we are at home," said Laver. Wins in the following two AMCC games would probably secure the #2 seed, possibly even the #1 seed, which would mean at least one home playoff game. However, the Lions have to focus first on Bethany, who plays Saturday here at Behrend in a non-conference game. are progressing in the right direction. "We are ready for it. We're getting better every game," said Gahagen. ousing and Food Service Athlete of the Week PENNSTATE ne Christine Leininger SPORT: Women's Tennis CLASS: Sophomore DATE: Oct. 7 Christine Leininger (Pittsburgh/North Hills) was named this week's Beacon/ Food and Housing Athlete of the Week.
