The interfaith prayer service will focus on peace and unity through various faith traditions and will include readings and prayers from the Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Native American, and Muslim faiths. Music and moments of reflections will also be part of the service. Everyone is welcome. `Rent' comes to Eisenhower Auditorium Rent, the landmark American musical that played to three sold-out houses at Penn State last December, returns to the Center for the Performing Arts for one performance only Wednesday, Sept. 18, at 7:30 p.m. in Eisenhower Auditorium. Lauffer inducted into Hall of Fame For 29 years, the late Herb Lauffer was a vital member of the Athletics Depart ment at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. This year on June 15, as part of the 2002 Alumni Reunion, Lauffer was inducted to the Athletic Hall of Fame. He was this year's only inductee. "Herb was a gentle man but a strong leader who helped usher in a new athletics era at Penn State Behrend," said interim Provost and Dean Dr. Jack Burke. ""He reached out to the community, particularly to young people. In fact, he was founder and president of the Erie Youth Soccer Association. It's fitting that he be named to the Hall of Fame, since he initiated this important sports recognition at Penn State Behrend." As head soccer coach for twenty-three years, Lauffer tallied 131 victories, making him the most winning soccer coach in Penn State Behrend's history. In 1971, he led his team to the Penn State Commonwealth Campus championship. He earned NAIA Coach of the Year honors in 1976 and 1978, and in 1978 coached his team to the NAIA District 18 championship. He also produced several NSCAA regional All-Americans and All-Conference players. Lauffer became director of Athletics in 1981. Under his leadership, Penn State Behrend made the move from NAIA status to NCAA Division 111 and joined the Eastern College Athletic Conference. The college also expanded from eight to twelve varsity sports during this period . No Doubt performs at Bryce Jordan Center The superstar band No Doubt, with special guests Good Charlotte and The Distillers, will appear in concert at the Bryce Jordan Center at State College Monday, Oct. 14 at 7:30 p.m. Hailing from Anaheim, Calif., the members of No Doubt began making music together more than 15 years ago. Combining such musical styles as guitar-rock, ska, dance, reggae and pop, vocalist Gwen Stefani, bassist Tony Kanal, guitarist Tom Dumont and drummer Adrian Young strive to produce music that is fun and uplifting, without sacrific ing raw power and drive. Early assurance agreement approved Students at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, who plan to become physi cians now have an opportunity to apply for early acceptance to medical school as a result of an agreement signed by Behrend officials and the Penn State College of Medicine in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Dr. Roger Knacke, director of the School of Science at Penn State Behrend, said the college has completed an "early assurance" agreement with the College of Medicine that will permit students who meet grade point average and testing requirements to be admitted to the College of Medicine in their junior year. Ad mission is contingent upon maintaining good grades during their senior year and completing a bachelor of science degree at Penn State Behrend. Knacke recognized the work of the Health Professions Advisory Committee at Penn State Behrend in developing the early assurance agreement. The committee includes Dr. Paul Barney, Dr. Michael Campbell, Dr. Larry Eckroat, Dr. David Hunnicutt, Dr. Martin Kociolek, Ms. Lisa Mangel, and Dr. James Warren. In addition to informing eligible students about the early assurance program, this committee is responsible for reviewing applications to the program. The com mittee tracks the progress of each student in the program to ensure continued eligibility. "Students who follow this program must work very closely with their advisers to ensure completion of all the math and science courses called for by the College of Medicine," he said. New technol ogy enhances lecture hall Science 101, the lecture hall where the science talks are held, is running a little more smoothly these days. The floor tile was removed and,: replaced with carpet, and ne equipment was installed over th z summer to accommodate lecturer more effectively. "The room needed some polish," said Media and Instructional Suppo Center (MISC) manager Jim Carroll. The lecture hall is now equipped with a SMART Board Matisse, which t. could be described as a sort of whiteboard that works along with the data projector. With the previous system, • professors standing in front of the screen blocked the students' vision. The SMART Board Matisse has a plasma TV screen that the professo can write on using an overlay.
