Page 14 The Behrend Beacon Track and field rewrites books at Fredonia, again Two weeks ago, Behrend’s track and field teams traveled to Fredonia for a non-scored meet. The Lions were impressive then, but upon their return to Fredonia last weekend for their first scored meet, impressive does not begin to describe the performance. On Saturday, the men took 20 places, finishing fourth overall. The women took 18 places and came in third place as a team. The women’s achievement is remarkable when you consider that they only took 11 athletes. Coach Dave Cooper was very pleased with the teams’ performances. “They went up against some strong teams in Buffalo State and Fredonia and scored well," he said. "The teams performed well and many individuals contributed to the teams' success.” The women’s showing at Fredonia was remarkable considering the odds. The day before the Patriots shocked the world, the Lady Lions opened quite a few eyes. “This small group of girls are amazing to say the least,” said sophomore Heather Efaw. “Many of the girls had to run three events, which is very hard to do and score points.” The girls did not even have competitors in five events. Aside from the many places, from where the team points came, the girls set five new school records. Several women p'iced in multiple events and had very successful days. Suzie Szafran took two first places in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:35.52 seconds, and as a member of the 4 x 800 relay which ran a nww Behrend best of 10:48.49. Andrea Sanko took third in the 3,000, setting a new team record with a time of 12:04.49. In addition to the relay, Jessica Sarver seized first and a new Behrend record in the 1,500 with a time of 5:17.40. She also took second in the 800 in 2:35.93. The final member of the 4 x 800 was Jessica Knapp, who had a busy day finishing just behind Sarver in the. 1,500 and 800, taking second and third, respectively. The 4 x 400 relay team ran a 4:31.68 to set a new school record and obtain second place. The record-setting members included Marlena McNutt, Amanda Van Tassel, Efaw, and Jenn Smalek - who also took fifth in the 400 with a time of 1:05.43. Lindsay Schulte captured two fourth-place finishes, running a 7.88 in the 55 dash and a 28.21 in the 200 (also a new school record). The final place winner contributing to the women’s third place finish was Tara Burgess, who took fifth place in the 800 with a rime 0f2:48.82. The men’s team was led by Jay Davids’ ECAC finals qualifying high jump of 6-4, which not only set a new school record, but also gave him first place in the event. The 55 hurdles witnessed Isiah Meek run an 8.37 for third, while Dave Masilunas finished a mere Women’s Basketball School C.R. The 4 x 800 relay team won the event by setting a new school record. The team was made up of Davids, Gaines, Brian Wheeler, and Tim Schultheis. In the pole vault event, Don Hackworth took fifth place with Steve Feder taking sixth. Hackworth broke Feder’s two-week old record of 12- 6 by clearing 13 feet. Tom Ashcroft heaved the shot put 40’11” to attain third place and set a school record. The final place winner in the men’s effort was Josh Carmichael, who took fifth in the triple jump, leaping 40- The teams’ next challenge will come this weekend at Slippery Rock. Both the men and women will be facing some very tough opponents. “We expect to continue to improve this weekend at Slippery Rock,” Cooper said. “We’ll run against predominantly Division II schools there but that should draw some great performances from our team since we are such competitors.” The team is building off strong performances and others are fueled by goals not yet attained. With the athletes improving every week, the Lions believe Division II may have a few surprises coming. THE BEACON SCOREBOARD Men’s Basketball School C.R.
