The Behrend Beacon Water polo team finishes season with loss to rival Mercyhurst 'These guys have a ton of potential, they just have to harness it' by Zoe Rose staff writer In one of the most anticipated rivalry games of the season, the men's water polo team battled again Mercyhurst last week end in the Southern Championships at the U.S. Naval Academy. Preparation was intense and focused as the Lions looked ahead; the fight needed to roar to a win against the 'Hurst. With the tight score at the last match of 10-9. the Blue and White's expectations and spirits were very high. "Everything had to be put on the line, things just did not work out for us," said coach Josh Heynes, commenting on the 6- 5 loss to Mercyhurst. Although the year ended in a loss, an ar ray of Lions placed in the top five in nu merous categories such as season goals, at tempts, percent shooting, assists, and steals, to name a few. Among the leaders was freshman standout Andy Hanhauser, who took the No. 1 spot in every category ex cept percentage shooting (Allen Haywood) and K.O's (Jon Harding). Coming in second for season goals and attempts was sophomore Mark Ostrzeniec, while junior Chad Holtzu was second for percent shooting, and freshman Casey Doody was second for assists. In the goalie category, freshman Rob Christensen fills the number one spot for goalie saves and goals against, while freshman Nick McGrady holds the number one position for season blocking percentage. S(,ries few Academic All American and hopefully a Team Academic All American," said Heynes "We are looking at a few awesome re cruits to come and pick up our level of play," he added about next season. The difficulty with recruiting is that lo cal colleges Gannon and Mercyhurst offer athletic scholarships for water polo, which in effect could draw the good players away from Behrend. However, with the statis tics the freshmen have been creating, they will try to do their best for next season. "We have to do our best in the off season and get the recruits we can, and train harder and more often than anyone else," said Heynes Hanhauser commented on improvements that are essential for the team in the future. "Water polo is not a game that you just are naturally good at. It takes time and skill to be good. Next year the team should be a lot better, because everyone has gotten their feet wet and played a little." Next season will require more endurance and motivation. The season will be even tougher because of more games and the competition will be improved. "Team work is a huge part of this game," said Doody regarding the 2002 season. "Next year we will definitely have to come together as a team if we are to get more wins." If the team is motivated and each player looks to improve himself, the team's talent will show in the games, especially at home, that they begin to win. "These guys have a ton of potential they just have to harness it. - said Heynes.
