Page 2b The Behrend Beacon After finding heartache team comes home to nothing but success by Bob Palivoda staff writer While many Penn State students sat back and relaxed over the fall break, the Penn State Behrend women's soccer team traveled to California to focus on stronger competition. Their first game was against nationally ranked Redlands. In the first half of play, Redlands was able to strike first by slipping a shot into the goal. Behrend did not let that goal affect its game plan. Coming out in the second half, Behrend's women were on a mission. With an assist by Laura Furko, Aubrey Nicksich blazed one into the net. This was the only goal of the second half as goalkeeper Michelle Malatesta made her defensive play known to the state of California. Malatesta had 17 saves on the day. After grinding through both halves of play, the two teams had to face off in overtime. This match-up was decided when Redlands narrowly dumped a shot in the net for a 2-1 win. Behrend then went up against Claremont, but the Lions were not up to the task. The game did not end up to Behrend's Claremont dominated against the Lions. In the first half Behrend let up one goal. Coming hack to the field for the second half of play, the women were still not able to get it together. Getting hammered with shots on goal, Malatesta was not able to stop them all. A total of three goals were scored in the second half of play leaving Behrend with a 4-0 loss. After their second loss of their trip to California, Behrend's record dropped to 5-9-1. After coming hack from California. the ome 's first match-up was a conference game against Pitt-Greensburg on Oct. 13. Behrend heat Greensburg 3-1, increasing their conference record to a still undefeated 4-0 (overall 6-9-1). The story of this game was when Furko surpassed Behrend's scoring record of 3I goals. Michelle Gutting, whose career at Behrend was from 1998-00, held the record. Laura currently holds the record at 33 but being that the season is not finished vet, that record has no where to go hut up. On Wednesday, the Lions played La Roche Women's Soccer School C.R. Cross country teams finish second place at Grove City The Behrend cross country teams competed in a much smaller meet at the Grove City Invitational this past Friday than the Loyola Invitational two weeks before. What the race lacked in quantity, the Lions made up for with quality team and individual perfomiances. "I was very pleased with the performance of both teams," said head coach Dave Cooper. The Behrend men finished second in the meet behind host Grove City. Sophomore Kevin Ritzert won the men's race with a time of 31:18. Dan Croft arid Mike Bartlett finished in the top 10 to give the Lions a boost in the team standings. Croft finished the race in fifth with a time of 32:27, followed in seventh by Mike Bartlett at 32:40. Other finishers for the Lions were Matt Sprang (33:07) in 12', Tim Schultheis (33:23) in 14th and Matt Heidecker (33:29 ) in Isth. Clayton Kirschner crossed the line at 33:44. The Lions' times weren't as fast as previous meets but according to Cooper, there was a reason for that Erie offers many opportunities for skaters/bikers to practice their skills It is said that Erie is a Mecca for BMX (freestyle biking). Why? Consider this: Erie is a big city, so the street riding is plentiful. Pennsylvania itself has excel lent dirtpaths for trailblazers. Shebang, an indoor skatepark and the Zuck Park trails are hem, and on a teeny, tiny note: Kris Bennett and Chris Doyle, both pro hikers, reside here. In fact, I've spied Bennett at &ten Park at 2 a.m., but that's another story all together. Doyle recently won bronze at the Gravity Games for dirt jump. The street scene here can only be explained in these two words: Go downtown! There among the fish you'll find enough rails, ledges, and gaps to appease even the pickiest of street destroyers. Always remember that when riding the streets, the cops will bust you for sea soning public property, so be careful. If you skate or inline there is plenty to do, but these downtown streets are more bike oriented. As the winter season grows nearer, skateparks be come the warm, year-round riding alternative.
