In spite of the losses, the team played each game extremely well. "We gave all three teams a scare!" said coach Josh Heynes. At each halftime break, Behrend either had the lead or was tied. Cross country teams show drastic improvement in Slippery Rock Invitationa The Behrend men's and women's cross country teams traveled to compete in the Slip pery Rock Invitational this past weekend for the first time in their four-year history. Both teams improved from previous weeks, accord ing to Behrend head coach Dave Cooper. The Behrend women placed the highest of the Division 111 schools that competed at the meet, placing fourth out of eight overall teams. Cooper said he was "very pleased with the performance of our women's team." Andrea Sanko led the Lions for the first time this season with an 11th place finish in a time of 25:55, followed by Jessica Knapp, who crossed the line in 12th place. "We ran with each and every team we played, and compared to last year's team we are far above in performance and conditioning. I am very impressed with these men," said Heynes. Junior Chad Holzshu, who has greatly improved his game from last year, has put in some serious work and is now one of the offensive leaders on the team. Holzshu plays one of the toughest positions, the two-meter hole, which compares to the center in basketball. "All of our plays and drives are based on him," said Heynes. Another standout is freshman Andy Hanhauser, who hails from McDowell High School. Hanhauser was part of the Pennsylvania High School state championship team. Hanhauser has brought a vast knowledge of water polo experiences with him and is the team leader in goals and steals. "He has definitely been a catalyst for this team's improvement this year," said Heynes. The Lions will prepare for a big weekend of competition in the Grove City Invitational. Szafran and Lyndsey Boor also crossed the line together, finishing 22nd and 23rd, respec tively. Clair Manelick, Jessie Coe, Marlena McNatt and Tara Burgess also competed for the Lions. Cooper gauged the women's improvement by how they have closed the gap between themselves and other teams during the past three weeks. "Slippery Rock beat us by 10 points last week compared to beating us by over 100 points just three weeks earlier," said Cooper. The Behrend men finished seventh of the 11 teams that competed. They were led by Kevin Ritzert, who finished in 24th place with a time of 28:29. Dan Croft finished second for the Lions, crossing the line in 39'h place, followed by Tim Schultheis (45), Mike Barlett (46), Dan Alvis (52) and Clayton SCOREBOARD BEHREND SPORTS Women's Tennis School C.R. Coo per hopes the meet will show the Lions where they stand in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference. "Frostburg should be a good test of our standing in the conference at this point," said Cooper. The AMCC Championships will be on Oct. 27 at La Roche. Cooper continues to preach improve- ment to his teams "Improvement will continue in the weeks ahead, we just need to stay healthy, confident and focused." Women's Volleyball School . C.R. All three play in the cage and out in the water. Brian Vallor, last year's goalie, takes the lead role when the Lions are in deep water. Nick McGrady guards the cage when Behrend is in shallow water. Rob Christensen plays between the bars when the team needs him. All three goalies block the ball well. "Again, I would like to emphasize that we are a Division 111 sport that plays Division I, Division 11, and Division 111 schools," said Heynes. "This is a daunting task, considering these guys who play for me, do it for the love of the sport and not money. They put in just as much time and effort as these other schools, and sometimes that does not show on the final "However, we are a better team than last year, and we have made dramatic improvements," added Heynes. "We have given teams a run for their money, and soon we will beat them; it is just a matter of when and where."
