The game was long and drawn out, with , the ball going back and forth mostly in the defensive ends. Behrend had only nine shots on goal, but scored on two of them. Andy McCormick scored the first goal 15 minutes into the game. Behrend's Dan Falk scored the only other goal on a penalty kick. Jefferson had 12 shots, but none had to be saved by Behrend goalie Jacob Hordych. Jefferson managed to stop five out of the nine shots on goal. The win raised Behrend's record to 4-1. Behrend played their fourth straight away game against Altoona. The effects of the road trip did not seem to bother them, as the Lions won 4-1 . Andy McCormick, with an assist from Ryan Ohl and Chris Lightner, struck first for Behrend. Then one minute later, Mark Szewczykowski scored with an assist from Falk. "The team is good at putting goals away when they are given the opportunity," said Young men's, women's golf teams hit the links by Mike Bello sports editor The men's and women's golf teams have a lot of work ahead of them. Both squads are lined with many underclassmen, whose experience on the golf course at the college level is very limited at this point. In fact, the men's team is composed of only two sophomores and eight freshmen while the women's roster includes two seniors and three sophomores. Second-year head coach Pat Mashuda isn't too worried about the lack of playing experience his teams have this year and their chances of improving upon last year though. "With a fourth place finish in last season's conference tournament, it will be difficult to improve this season. The top three schools La Men's Soccer School C.R. "We are very confident in our team and in each other." Lightner and Falk scored other goals. Falk was named the AMCC's "Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week" for his performances. On the statistical side of the game Behrend had 11 shots on goal compared with Altoona's six. Altoona was only able to stop three of 11 kicks. Behrend was much better, preventing seven shots from becoming goals. Behrend was not done yet, taking its win streak to Lake Erie Tuesday. With high spirits and an eagerness to end the streak of away games, Behrend annihilated Lake Erie 8-0. After a tight first half, the Lions scored most of the goals in the second half. Almost everyone on the team scored a goal. Behrend posted an overwhelming advantage in shots on goal, 20 to six. With the depressing number of shots and their 1-3 record, Lake Erie was obviously frustrated and drew four penalty cards. This win brings about the end of Behrend's road trip. The Lions' next and most difficult game is at home Sunday vs. Elizabethtown, where Behrend will bring a 6-1 record. Mark Szewczykowski said that even though Elizabethtown beat a nationally ranked team 5- 2, the Lions are very confident and exited about Sunday's game and hope to see a ton of fan support. Roche College, Pitt-Bradford, and Pitt- Greensburg are very strong again this year. We are looking to put our selves in a position that if we have a very good day, we will be in the hunt at this years conference tournament. I think that we have much more depth on this year's team than we did last year. Overall, our freshman class is very strong," said Mashuda. On the men's side, sophomores Kirk Seth and John Telliho will be looked upon to keep the team strong in the early run. "The number one goal is to be competitive in every match we play. Also, I would like to see some leadership from our two second-year players (Seth, Telliho)," remarked Mashuda. Rounding out the team are freshmen Albert Abramovic, Jeff Black, Josh Code, Jeremy Keyon, Anthony Pagliari, Matthew Sack, Bo Usko, and Jim Vaughn. After that home game, the Lions go right back to the road, playing at conference foe Pitt- Bradford on Wednesday. The Lions will return and Kellee Harms head the women's side, with sophomores Sara Fisher, Paula Jessup, and Andrea Winston rounding out the roster. Fisher and Winston are the only returning players. The Lions began their season on Sept. 13 in the Pitt-Greensburg Tournament by placing seventh out of 17 teams. The Lions had a combined score of 329, only 12 shots from the leaders, while Pagliari tied for fifth place with a round of 76. Seth wasn't too far behind, shooting an 80 on the day. On Saturday, the Lions participated in the Lake Erie College Tournament, which included four other AMCC teams. This time, the Lions did not fare as well, placing seventh out of 10 teams with a combined score of 341. The Lions were scheduled to play in the Behrend Tournament on Thursday, which gave the Lions a chance to show the other AMCC teams they are for real. Said Mashuda, "The Behrend Invitational provides our team with the opportunity to play some great competition outside of our conference.
