The Lions opened their season in the Allegheny Tournament on Saturday with three straight losses, which is more than they had all last year when they went 18-2. In the first game against Carnegie Mellon, the Lions dropped 10 straight sets in their singles matches, and then dropped their doubles match 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore Jenny Zhang and freshman Maggie Venema gave it their all, but Carnegie Mellon proved too dominating for Behrend. In their second match of the day, the Lions did not fare much better, as they again lost every one of their singles matches. The Lions lost their doubles match as well, 6-1 and 6-0, to drop their record to 0-2. The Lady Lions fared better in the third game of the season versus Fredonia State. Senior Carrie Reedy and freshman Kimmy Asada won their matches 8-4 and 8-3 respectively, but that turned out to be all the Lions could muster. Just like before, the Lions enjoyed moderate success but still managed to drop a 7-2 decision. The Lions were scheduled to play against Buffalo State on Thursday. They will host the Behrend Invitational on Saturday, opening play against Bethany at 10:30 a.m. Other schools participating in the day long tournament include Alfred, John Carroll. Allegheny, Fredonia, Frostburg, and Edinboro. The Lions will look to avenge last year's loss, where--if not for a 3-2 loss to Allegheny-- the Lions would have won their tournament. No matter the results, the Lions won't have much time to rest because on Sunday the Behrend team starts the conference portion of its schedule. The Lions will host Frostburg at 9 a.m. and then Lake Erie at 11 a.m. On Wednesday the Lions travel downstate to play Pitt- Greensburg, and by that time the Lions hope their early season struggles are a thing of the past.
