All five were instrumental as the Lions went 2-2 in tournament play. by Mike Bello sports editor It is always important for any team to get the first few games of the season out of the way, as there's always that rust that exists from not having competed against opponents in games that count. The women's volleyball team was able to shake off the jitters by having a strong, although not spectacular, showing in their first games of the season at the Cortland Tournament. The Lions overcame an opening loss to win two of their next three games in finishing 2-2 and started their season off on a positive note which the team will need as they head into the Carnegie Mellon Tournament on September 7 and 8. The team opened up their season by going up against State University of New York Geneseo. The Lions stayed close in the first set, losing by a 24-30 score, but followed that up with a 13-30 loss in the second set. They were then able to rebound with a much stronger showing, but in the end couldn't quite pull out the victory as they lost the third set 25-30. Men's Soccer School C.R. The Lions, after a Tuesday game with Allegheny, head into the Carnegie Mellon Tournament with aspirations of revenging last year's poor performance. The women won only one out of 12 sets in last year's tournament, and with their own tournament coming up in a week, the Lions are looking to brush up on their game. The Lions will be looking to avoid what happened last year, where their record never climbed much higher than .500 the whole season because of early season losses to non-conference opponents, including four in the Carnegie Mellon Tourney. Before their tournament the on September 14 and 15, the Lions will play host to Thiel College on Tuesday September 11 at 7 p.m. in their first game in the new Junker Center. The Lions would definitely want to come out of their first season game in their new home with a win, and give the other AMCC teams something to think about when they come up to play in the Lions' new 'digs'.
