FRIDAY, MARCH 23, 2000 Women’s organization to march on D.C. by Hillary Hawranko staff writer A march is being held in response to President George W. Bush’s views on reproductive rights in Washington, D.C., on April 22. In an effort to stand up for their beliefs, many pro-choice organizations are participating in this event. The Northwest Pennsylvania Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW) is providing transportation for all those in Erie and the surrounding areas who wish to attend the event. NOW is actively working to encourage Behrend stu dents to join in the march. On a national level, NOW is com posed of 600 local chapters and state organizations and nine regions. Serv ing as the largest feminist organiza tion in the world, NOW was estab lished in 1966. For over thirty years Annual dinner focuses on Asia by Mike Grooms staff writer Behrend’s School of Business has several interesting things planned for the rest of the spring semester. One item on the school’s plate is an inter national dinner that is taking place on Sunday, April 8, in the Reed Com mons. This year, the dinner will focus on Asia. The dinner will have a variety of foods from 21 different Asian countries, all of which were chosen by the participating international management students. The dinner will provide students with an oppor tunity to sample foods and experi ence cultural practices that are prominent in a variety of different countries across the Asian continent. The international management class previously required that all stu dents attend the international dinner as part of the course. According to Jana Goodrich, lecturer in manage ment, "for the first time in this class, students are participating in the In ternational Dinner at their option, rather than it being a required ele- The Greek Column Hello Behrend. We’d like to introduce you to the new Greek Section of the Beacon. For many years the Greek society has been silent in our own student publication until now. We have purchased this space to let you know what we are doing, how we are doing, and where we are doing it at. We would also like to address questions that you have about us. We are now in the 21 st Century and the 1980’s stereotypes need to go. The Animal House days are over and the new Greeks have taken control. We are not the beer guzzling Neanderthals that many of you think of or have been told about by the popular, stereotypical media. We are strong-minded organizations that wish to change the campus community in a positive way. School spirit is at a low and the group who can change the level is the Greek community. This article is just one of the first steps in making this campus a better place. The Penn State Behrend Greek community consists of five fraternities and three sororities. They are, respectively: Delta Chi (AX), Sigma Tau Gamma (ITT), Sigma Kappa Nu (ZKN), Tau Kappa Epsilon (TKE), Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT), Alpha Sigma Alpha (AZA), Alpha Sigma Tau (AZT), and Theta Phi Alpha (O$A). The brothers of the Sigma Tau Gamma chapter as well as the Delta Chi chapter are participating in the Books for Kids Foundation in order to raise money and books for hundreds of children in the Erie area. These two chapters as well as Sigma Kappa Nu, Tau Kappa Epsilon, and Zeta Beta Tau, are all involved in the Adopt-A-Highway program and have been 'or some time. The Theta Phis are also planning their highway cleanup for March 31. The ZBTs are also planning their annual philanthropic “Walk to Pittsburgh” to raise money for the Big Brothers/Big Sisters oiganization of Erie. In conjunction with the Bookstore, the ladies of AZA are reading to children on their statement, in the words of one of NOW’s founders, Betty Friedan, has been, “to take action to bring women into full participation in the mainstream of American Society now, exercising all privileges and respon sibilities thereof in truly equal part nership with men.” The organization also believes in equal rights, the opposition of racism, advocating for abortion and reproduc tive rights, support of lesbian and gay rights, and discontinuation of vio lence against women. The Northwest Pennsylvania chap ter of NOW is one of the chapters that make up the national organization. Having eighty members involved, this chapter’s meetings are rotated be tween Edinboro, Millcreek, and Fairview. Meetings take place on the second Thursday of every month, be ginning at 7:00 p.m. Anyone inter ment of the course.” As chances are pretty good that most people will not be going to all 21 countries in their lifetime, this opportunity allows stu dents to explore a wide variety of choices that otherwise may never be experienced. The dinner is meant to be a great learning experience. It allows stu dents to become more diverse in their knowledge of other countries’ cul tures and their respective dining eti quette. Goodrich attests, “conse quently, it is a great, energetic, and especially enthusiastic group of stu dents. The International Dinner is a wonderful opportunity for the stu dents to enhance their knowledge and practice a wide variety of skills. Of course, it also offers a great op portunity to explore the social, po litical, and business customs and practices of other cultures. “It provides a chance to teach and share information with other stu dents, faculty and staff, and the gen eral public, all of whom are invited to attend and participate. Goodrich stated, “We are all looking forward to a full house on April 8, so anyone hoping to attend should purchase a ticket soon, to en sure their seat at the dinner.” Tickets for the dinner are $8 each and can be purchased through Denise Cressley, Joe Matise, or Jana Goodrich.
