Mens’ tennis enters season with confidence The men’s tennis team has a promising season to better last year’s third place AMCC finish. The team will begin their season on February 17. versus Mercyhurst and Allegheny at Westwood R.C. With a strong team, head coach Jeff Barger sees much promise in the player’s abilities. Dave Marasco, Matt Sudak, and Ramon Enriquez are the three seniors that will be playing for the team this season. Juniors Brent Carlson and Dave Cooper are expected to be leaders on this experienced team. Other juniors include Atif Chaudry, Jacob Cornewell, and Bill Welsberg. James Sheen and Eugene Lhyman represent the sophomore class on the team. Rounding out the roster is lone freshman, lan Brendle. Although there are only a few players who have played for Behrend in the past, all of the players are experienced in the sport according to coach Barger. This is the third year that Jeff Barger has coached at Behrend. He has previous coaching experience from Ripley High School, and was a stand-out player at Fredonia State, where he graduated in 1984 with a business degree. The toughest non-league opponents are expected to be Allegheny Feb. 17 Mar. 17 Mar. 24 Mar. 28 SCOREBOARD J BEHREND SPORTS MEN’S BASKETBALL School Pitt-Bradford Frostburg La Roche Penn State Behrend Pitt Greensburg Penn State Altoona Lake Erie Behrend 60 St. John Fisher 66 Behrend St. John Fisher St. John Fisher Player Fiorelli White Niggli Schoener Berwanger Lutman Ripple Morely Behrend Player Curren Orris Hairston Ponsoll Keith Merrill Banner Conley Timm Behrend 75 Frostburg St. 64 Behrend 36 39 75 Frostburg 30 34 64 Frostburg St. FG 3-pt 3-10 1-5 1- 1-2 1-6 0-0 12-17 2-4 0-1 0-0 2- 2-3 0-2 0-0 5-11 0-0 Player Brown Grabill Bowerv Ayers Hall Tose Millione Henley Behrend Player Curren Hairston Ponsoll Keith Merrill Banner Conley Timm McKinney by Abigail Long sports editor Mercyhurst/AUegheny @Pitt-Greensburg Penn State Altoona @ F.dinboro Waynesburg Penn State Behrend Invitational Frostburg/Lake Erie C.R. Last year Allegheny completely dominated Behrend by a score of 0-9. This match will be a gauge for the rest of the season. If the Lions are able to control these difficult teams, they’ll have a very promising season. It will also help Coach Barger to develop a plan of attack for the future. In the AMCC, Behrend suffered losses to Penn State Altoona and Frostburg. The team had six wins versus ten losses last season. After spring break the tennis team will kick off their AMCC competition at Pitt-Greensburg. On March 24 the Lions will have their first home meet versus Penn State Altoona. “Frostburg is definitely the team to beat. My 4,5, and 6 players will need to play well, as well as doubles in order to overcome Frostburg,’’ said Barger. This is basically a new team, very different from last year. “Basically we’ll improve because we have better players this year,” Barger said, “this is the best team I’ve had in my three years of coaching.” The team is preparing for the season by practicing in the evenings at Pennbriar. They hope to greatly improve on their current skills in order to achieve their goals for the season. Their goals are to improve on last year’s AMCC third place finish, and finish in the top two. They also hope to improve on last year’s 6-10 overall record, and finish with a winning record.
