Please submit all notices by noon on Tuesday to see It In that week’s Issue: y \ ~ V- { * A Closer Look/^X THE BLUE BUS •,%:-• ' \ v ' •:•/*«■ 'W- 8:00 p.m BEHREND CONCERT SERIES CONTINUES The Behrend College Choir and the Behrend Concert Band will host their joint Winter Concert on Tuesday, February 13, in the Reed Commons at 8:00 p.m. The Behrend College Choir, under the direction of Dr. Daniel Barnard, will be performing numbers with a literary approach, including “Afternoon on a Hill,” text by Edna St. Vincent Millay and music by Gene Grier and Lowell Everson; “Maggie and Milly and Molly and May,” text by e. e. cummings and music by Vincent Persichetti; and “Three Rounds on Famous Words: Thrift, Health, and Caution,” by William Schumann. Also to be performed is a piece that Barnard arranged himself, titled “Jimmie’s Got a Goil.” This number is part of a set titled “Three short choral works on texts by e. e. cummings.” The Behrend Concert Band, directed by Dr. Gary Viebranz, will feature a repertoire including the march, “Coat of Arms,” by George Kenny; “Llwyn Onn,” a traditional folk song arranged by Brian Hogg; and “Prelude, Siciliano, and Rondo,” by Malcolm Arnold. For more information, call the RUB Desk at x 6242. mark African-American novelist, performance poet, and traditional griot Arthur Flowers will perform at Penn State Behrend on Wednesday, February 21, at 6:30 p.m. in the Reed Commons Flowers’ appearance is part of the Diversity Through Poetry Series and coincides with the African American Extravaganza celebrat ing Black History Month. Flowers is know as a contempo rary griot, a tradition derived from the ancient Africans who memo rized history and orally passed it on. Flowers is also a performance poet, combining literary reading, topical commentary, and a variety of African and blues instruments in his presentations Flowers has written several novels, poems, and even a children’s book. The Commuter Council, in conjunction with the Lion Entertainment Board, is sponsoring the Ultimate Dance-A- Thon Survivor from 8:00 p.m. on Friday, February 23, to 8:00 a.m. on Saturday, February 24. Based on the TV show “Survivor,” the dance-a-thon will divide participants into tribal teams and the teams will compete to prevent their members from being “voted off the island.” This year’s dance-a-thon will benefit children affected by the HIV virus. Winners and Losers in the American Dream.” This conference will run from Tuesday, February 27, to Thursday, March 1. The three-day event will include two lectures, six 90-minute workshops moderated by community leaders, and a dramatic presentation of Working, a play by Studs Terkel. Lecturers for the conference will be Dr. Cornel West and Dr. Annette Levitt, professor of English at Drexel University.
