FOCAL POINT Now that's Penn State pride - no pants, no coat, sitting in the snow all by yourself in the middle of the night. But, he's got the Penn State shirt on and he's wavin' his banner all over the place. Now, if he could only get some fans to sit there with him . . . Beacon spreads cheer with Diehl students by Liz Hayes news editor On Monday, December 4, several students from the Beacon staff went to spread some holiday cheer at Diehl Elementary School. Seven staff members met with Mrs. Tunney's sixth grade class during their 9:15 a.m. reading hour. "It was a lot of fun going back into an elementary school after so many years. We really had a lot of fun, and I think the kids did too," said Jason Snyder, editor-in-chief of the Beacon. The Beacon had set up the meeting a few weeks ahead of time, looking for a way to give some of their time over the holiday season. "We hear of the great things other organizations do over the holiday season and all year round and we wanted to get involved as well," commented Ainslie Ulmer, public relations manager for the paper. "But, we also wanted to do something that seemed to relate to out the papers because Mrs. Tunney had them use our newspaper for their vocabulary/spelling lesson. She had them each find three words that they didn't know that they could go over later," Jeff Miller commented. Miller is the photo editor for the paper. "1 really enjoyed going because I got to see what a real classroom is like. I'm considering going into education, and this was a really great experience for me," said Rob Wynne, wire service editor. After passing out the newspapers and some snacks, the Beacon played a version of Pictionary with the kids. "Instead of using the cards that came with the game, we had them find pictures in the paper and they drew those on the board for everyone to RIGHT: Libbie Johnson helps a Diehl student choose vocabulary words. They seemed to have a lot of fun posing for their friends and chasing each other around. It was a really fun time," Miller commented The Beacon is planning on making this project a regular activity. "We thought it would be really neat if we kept going back and established a rapport with this class," Ulmer said. "We are considering helping them publish their own small newspaper, with them doing most of the work and us just guiding them along. We might even have them over to the Beacon office to let them use some of our equipment," Snyder added.
