POET LINDA HOGAN COMMENCES NEW SPEAKER SERIES
Poet, novelist, and essayist Linda Hogan will be the first speaker of the newly
created Diversity Through Poetry Series at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College.
Hogan will present “Solar Storms” on Monday, November 6, at 7:00 p.m. in
the Reed Union Building Commons. This event is free and open to the public.
Hogan, a Chickasaw poet and professor at the University of Colorado, has
taught writing workshops at various universities and Indian and rural
-munities. Some of her most notable commendations

Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will dedicate its new $10.2
million Athletics and Recreation Center (ARC) on Thursday, Novem
ber 9, at 3:00 p.m. Among the guests on hand will be Penn State Presi
dent Graham Spanier, Penn State Board of Trustees Chair Edward P.
“Ted” Junker, and Penn State Behrend Council of Fellows Chair P.C.
“Hoop” Roche.
The 72,800-square-foot ARC, which replaces Erie Hall, will feature
three all-purpose courts and performance gym seating 1,600, an eight
lane swimming pool, a weight room, a three-lane running track jump
ing pits, an aerobics room, locker rooms, offices, and a variety of ex
ercise equipment. Erie Hall, with one basketball court and seating for
550, will continue to be used as a recreation facility offering activities
such as ballroom dancing, badminton, and yoga.
The ARC dedication will include a message from the president of
Penn State Behrend’s student government, performances by the dance
team, the cheerleaders, the Pep Band, and, of course, an appearance
by the Behrend Lion.

In addition to being a member of the first class to attend Behrend in
1948, Blair was the first editor of the Nittany Cub , Behrend’s first
student newspaper. He is a life member of the Penn State Alumni As
sociation and a member of the Penn State President’s Club. In 1998,
he established the Donald R. Blair Scholarship Endowment to benefit
outstanding students with financial need.
The Alumni Fellow Award is the most prestigious honor bestowed
by the Penn State Alumni Association and is administered in coopera
tion with Penn State’s academic colleges. The University’s Board of
Trustees has designated the title of Alumni Fellow as permanent and
lifelong. George Sample, publisher of the Corry Journal and presi
dent of Sample Media, was the 1999 Alumni Fellow.

SOCCER STAR COMES TO BEHREND
Brandi Chastain, a key member ol both the C.S. Women's Olympic and
World Cup soccer teams, will speak at iVnn State brie. The Behrend College,
on Thursday, November 16. at 7:30 p.m. in the Uced l Inion Building Commons.
Chastain became an instant international celebrity upon her game-winning
penalty kick in the 1999 World Cup
finals. She was a member of the
gold medal-winning U.S. Women's
National Team in the 1996 Centennial
Olympic Games, and played every
minute of the USA’s live matches at
that event.

DR. BEAUMONT KICKS OFF PROVOST’S SERIES
John Beaumont, associate prolessor ol engineering, will present the first
lecture in the 2000-2001 Provost's Speaker Series at Penn Stale Hrie, The
Behrend College. His address, ■'Building a Bridge Among Faculty, Students,
and Industry,” will be presented on Monday, November 13, at noon in the
Reed Union Building Lecture Hall. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Beaumont received the newly created 2001) Council of Fellows Faculty
Outreach Award for his leadership m the vies elopment ol tw o Penn State Frie
outreach centers, the Plastics Technology Deploy meni Center and the Plastics
Computer-Aided Engineering Center, which provide advanced technical
services and process improvement for the plasties-related industry in
northwestern Pennsylvania. He continues to work through these outreach
centers to assist regional manufacturers
Each year the Penn State Behrend Council ol Fellows presents its Faculty
Research Award and Excellence in leaching Award to (acuity who exhibit
outstanding efforts in these areas. This year, the Council also established the
Faculty Outreach Award, presented to a faculty member for outstanding service
to his or her community and profession.
The winners of these three awards are then invited to lecture in the Provost’s
Speaker Series. Other award winners who will be speaking this year include
Excellence in Teaching Award recipient Dr. John Champagne, associate
professor of English, and Faculty Research Award recipient Dr. Syed Saad
Andaleeb, associate professor of marketing.
