The following Monday, Behrend was named to the NCAA soccer tournament. This is the team’s first ever bid into the NCAA Division 111 Tournament. The previous three years, Behrend had been named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament. However, Nazareth College ended this historical event early, beating Behrend 7-1 on November 1. The AMCC Tournament kicked off on the Behrend fields with Behrend hosting Pitt-Bradford and simply blowing them away at an 8-2 margin of victory. Then ir was the women’s soccer team’s turn to wait for the winner of La Roche and Frostburg. The game went to double overtime. Frostburg came out on top 3-2. Frostburg had a 2-1 lead until the 65th minute of the game. Frostburg’s Jessica Linkins scored seven and a half minutes into the second overtime to give Frostburg the win. They became Behrend’s first cross country team to win the AMCC Championship Race in the program’s history. Behrend had ten athletes make the All-Conference team, five from the men’s team, and five from the women’s team. Not only did the men’s team win the championship but their head coach Rich Hoffman was this year’s “Coach of the Year.” The men’s team had five runners among the top ten finishers in the Sport In the championship game Behrend scored two minutes into the game as Laura Furko assisted Michelle Gutting. Frostburg’s Linkins scored her first of three on the day in the 14th minute to tie it up. Behrend then seemed to take over scoring the next three goals. Furko scored in the 23rd minute, and Bethany Cummings scored about seven minutes later to go into break with a 3-1 lead. Furko scored her second on the day in the 66th minute. None of these past three goals were assisted. Linkins then scored her other two goals within three minutes of each other. Cummings would get the game winner in the 80th minute with help from Aubrey Nicksich. This win helped Behrend set a school record for wins with 16. Coach Dan Perritano’s squad of 1998 won 15 games and made the EC AC Tournament. However, this year’s squad made it to the NCAA Tournament. Going into the tournament. Gutting led the team with 34 points, scoring 13 goals. Furko was close behind at 22 points, and she also scored 13 goals. Cummings leads the team with ten assists. She is in third place Albion Bethany Conference Tournament W 8-2 Conference Tournament AMCC championship race which was held at Frostburg State University. Kevin Ritzert was the first Behrend athlete to cross the finish line for the Lions. Ritzert was named this year’s “Newcomer of the Year.” He ran a 28:05.9 to take third place overall. Dennis Halaszynski and Sohrab Moeini were not far behind Ritzert, placing fourth and fifth. Mark Suroviec and Chuck Orton both finished in less than 30 minutes, placing seventh and ninth respectively. Ritzert, Halaszynski, Moeini, Suroviec, and Orton all made the All- Conference Team. Carl Altman, Matt in scoring on the team with 24 points. The Behrend Lions women’s soccer team also led the AMCC women’s soccer honors. Named to the all league squad were goalkeeper Michelle Malatesta, defenders Diane Holtsford and Jill Barbisch, midfielder Laura Furko, and forward Michelle Gutting. Aubrey Nicksich was named Newcomer of the Year. Michelle Malatesta captured MVP of the conference, and Dan Perritano was named Coach of the Year for the third time in four years. Katie Giles and Bethany Cummings were named honorable mention. Behrend received word Monday that they will play Nazareth in Rochester, N.Y. in the first game of the tournament, which took place Wednesday. Nazareth was 12-2-3 going into the contest. This is also the fourth year in a row they made the tournament. Nazareth won the Empire 8 Championship on October 21 with a 5-0 win over Hartwick, putting them on a four game winning streak. The winning streak would not cease against Behrend. Nazareth jumped out to a 2-0 lead at halftime. Behrend got a dose of their own medicine with Nazareth’s pressure defense keeping the ball in Behrend’s end of the field most of the contest. Nazareth had 11 shots on goal compared to Behrend’s three shots on goal. Nazareth also had 14 corner kicks. Laura Furko scored Behrend’s lone goal on a direct kick at the 83:23 mark of the game. Nazareth scored five goals in the second half, adding the last one with 1:22 to go in the game. The joyride finally ended for the Behrend women’s soccer team. Many records were broken, and many memories were formed. I’m very pleased and proud of their performance in winning their first AMCC title,” said Coach of the year Rich Hoffman. The women’s team also ran a terrific race, but fell short by just three points to take second place behind Frostburg State. That’s a big improvement compared to the Behrend women's team finishes in their previous seasons. It was third, fourth, fifth just like the men’s race with Lyndsey Boor taking third place, with a time of 20:57.1. Deidre Garrity, and Andrea Sanko were right behind Boor with less than a five second differential in their times. Local athletes Kathy Perry and Tina Rubay ran good races to place eighth and ninth respectively. Rubay had a dramatic finish, catching and passing Frostburg’s Katherine Eads going uphill to take the ninth position. All of the women representing Behrend in the AMCC finished in the top 15. Lyndsey Boor was named this year's women’s “Newcomer of the Year” for her efforts on the course. “Our women have done a tremendous job and came really close to beating one of the best programs in the East in Division 111. There was no ‘quit’ in anyone; they ran as hard as they could and just came up a little short,” said Hoffman. The women will have one more shot at beating Frostburg this season at the regional meet.
