Julie Leininger, named the AMCC's "Women’s Tennis Athlete of the Week," shined brightly at the AMCC tournament, leading the Behrend Lions to their fourth consecutive crown. She said she has reached her level of play by "practicing and commitment from the entire team." She won at number-one singles, and won first doubles w ith one of the women's tennis teams senior captains and partner Jamie Brubaker. Brubaker placed number two in first team singles. Leininger said. "Jamie and 1 work good as a team because we have different areas that each of us are better at, therefore we complement each other." Penn State Behrend Lions women’s soccer team to host AMCC Championships by Douglas Smith sports editor The Behrend women's soccer team has been very successful again this year. This success will allow them to host the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference Tournament this weekend. However, the team’s long winning streak of ten games ended when Behrend fell to John Carroll and Brockport in recent games. John Carroll got out on top quickly on October 19. They struck with the first goal of the game in the fourth minute and then added another in the twentieth minute. Behrend’s lone goal in the 4-1 loss came from Katie Giles. This occurred in the thirty-ninth minute. John Carroll added their other two goals late in the game. The game saw solo efforts on most of the goals, with only one assist tallied by John Carroll and none by Penn State Behrend. Coach Jeff Barger has proven to her that “consistency is the key, and winning is not everything." After the AMCC tournament she reacted to the win as an “awesome feeling,” and loves the fact that she has been a part of the Behrend tennis team since the beginning of the conference when they first started their run of successful seasons. “It was great to see how the team has grown over the past few years. We have worked hard as a team, and we have won as a team just like we started as acquaintances and ended as friends," said Chan. Chan placed number two with Angela Albertson in Doubles, and number four in Second Team Singles. Albertson also placed in the Second Team Singles at the number th ree position. Another player in her last year at Behrend and the third senior captain is Jen Morton, who placed number five in Second Team Singles in the AMCC tournament. She had a similar reaction by saying that, “the AMCC's were so On October 21, Behrend fell to Brockport 4-2. Brockport scored two goals in the sixteenth minute. The winner came in the thirtieth minute. Michelle Gutting scored in the f ortieth minute, adding to her high points total Tor the year, and Katie Giles added the second goal a minute later. Bethany Cummings had assists on both of the goals scored. However, Brockport put the game away in the seventieth minute. On October 24 the women traveled to Buffalo State and improved to 14- 4 overall. They held Buffalo State scoreless in the 2-0 victory. Brianna Shively and Laura Furko scored the goals in the final tune up for the women's soccer team before the all important AMCC Tournament. Gutting still leads the team in scoring-with twenty-seven points, followed by Laura Furko with twenty-three as of the Brockport game. Cummings is now tied for the most assists with seven on the year. Plus, the seniors will leave Behrentl as the only team to win fo u r consecutive AMCC championships. Coach Barger has taught all of us to always play fair and make us realize that we could win no matter what." Coach Jeff Barger received the AMCC "Coach it the Year” award, due to his team's amazing season and tournament performance along with his outstanding coaching ability. With the seniors' departure, Julie Leininger thinks that they have some “rebuilding” to do, and will definitely have to work hard for the fifth AMCC win, but she has faith PHOTO BY JEFF MILLER Katie Giles(front) and Laura Furko chase the action downfield. With this the senior set a new career record for assists in career with sixteen. This eclipsed the old mark of ten set by Michelle Finch who played for the Behrend Lions in 1995- 97. Cummings also leads in games played in a career with seventy-eight. One more assist this year will put her alone atop the single season assists list. The questions have been answered... Penn State repeated history and won the AMCC crown for the fourth consecutive year. The AMCC Tournament will begin today at 1:00 p.m. with Penn State Behrend taking on the fourth ranked Panthers of Pitt-Bradford. In the 3:00 p.m. game number two Frostburg will play number 3 La Roche. The w inners of the two games will face each other tomorrow' at 2:00 p.m. At Behrend Fields Behrend sends new sport to 1-79 Carnival The second new varsity sport at Behrend this year is set to kick oft' on November 3rd when the new swimming team travels to the Westminster 1-79 Carnival. The new Athletic and Recreational Center made the team possible. Now it is time to show' the opponents what thev got. The first expansion team of the year, men's water polo, failed to secure a victory, but the swimming team keeps hopes high. The men and women taking part in the first year of swimming here at Behrend are scheduled for eight meets. After the Westminster Carnival, the team will travel to Grove City, Clarion. Kdinhoro, Washington and Jefferson, and Penn State Altoona. The highlight of the season could be the Penn State Behrend meet here on campus on December 1 and 2. The season concludes on February 15 through the 17 at the Grove City Invitational. Coach Josh Heynes is keeping optimistic, despite suffering numerous losses with the water polo tern earlier this fall. He is looking for everyone to come up big this year. "The swimmers that I am counting on right now are the entire team. I would like them to step up and do their best each and every time. However. I do have a few standouts in mind. For the women, there is Amanda Brown and Hollie Stash. For the men it is Mark Ostrzeniec. Adam Demarrco, and Jon Harding,” said Coach Heynes. Still, it is tough to say how' well this team will do against proven teams. They will see various teams at many meets, but will most likely face Grove City and Washington and Jefferson numerous times. A lot of questions remain unanswered. "The experience level of this team ranges from coming right out of a high school or club program with lots of experience to little to no competitive swimming experience. The toughest opponent we have will be ourselves. We have to get through each meet and try to improve without getting down on ourselves. Getting faster each meet and trying to qualify swimmers for ECAC or Division 111 Champs is our goal, not necessarily winning each meet,” said Coach Heynes. Despite the questions, the dedication seems to be there. Coach Heynes has been instilling the right attitudes in his swimmers. Coach Heynes stated. "1 see the team a lot more competitive, especially with the recruits that we are looking at currently. Plus the team now understands that they will have to train over the summer and in the off season to get better and to keep up with the rest." As for right now, Coach Heynes has learned that the poolside of the ARC w'ill be ready in late November, but he does not plan to have practices scheduled there until after the New Year. The team will be vigorously preparing to play the teams mentioned above, which are mainly NCAA Division II Schools and therefore have a bigger choice of talent from their school. It can be frustrating to constantly play teams that people think are better than your team, but at least these meets will get Behrend’s pew swimming .team’s feet wet. Still there is hope for better competition in years to come. this "Five years from now hopefully there will be a conference meet either in the AMCC or a new conference that we can join, so that the team has something to look forward to at the end of the season,” said Coach Heynes. PITT- The season will most likely be a struggle. Still the team’s overall belief is that there is hope. 2:00 PM by Douglas Smith sports editor
