Martin and Sieg proving to be real Lion leaders

They came from Monroeville,
Pennsylvania, and Westminster,
Colorado, on August 18, 2000, and
began conditioning for the Behrend
Lions Soccer Team. These two
experienced men are the captains of
the men's soccer team and are
seniors here at Behrend. Their goal:
to successfully lead the Behrend
Lions toward the title of conference
champions. With this in mind the
two fearless leaders, Tommy Sieg
and James Martin, are working each
and every day to assist the Behrend
soccer team towards successfully
defeating the competition.
Sieg and Martin have collectively
been playing soccer for thirty-three
years. Sieg began at the age of six
and Martin at the age of four. Martin
said he chose to come across the
United States for school because his
father is from Pennsylvania. Martin
was looking at Penn State University
Park at first, but after talking to the
coach at Penn State University Park,
he decided that Behrend was the best
choice for school and sports.
Sieg and Martin are both MIS
majors and agree that it is difficult

to juggle playing soccer and the large
amount of schoolwork.
Martin stated, " Soccer and school
are difficult time wise and energy
wise."
Sieg is the goalkeeper for the
Lions, and Martin is a utility player
for the team. Their practices are held
daily from 3:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m.
Sieg also has goalie practice on
Mondays from 7:00 a.m. until 8:30
a.m. One day off is customary for
the team and Sieg and Martin use this

The Penn State Behrend women's
tennis team had a big week of match
play, winning two matches against
conference rivals, but losing a
heartbreaker to Allegheny in the
championship game of the third
annual Behrend Lions women's tennis
invitational for the second straight
The Invitational took place on
Saturday, September 16, and Behrend
took second after losing to Allegheny.
This year's participating teams
include Frostburg State, Fredonia,
John Carroll, Bethany, Edinboro,
Alfred. and Allegheny.
Behrend's senior tri-captains are
Jamie Brubaker. Christine Chan, and
Jen Morton. All three players were
all-conference performers last
season. The juniors include Angela
Alhertson, Michelle Brendel, and
Lennys Redonabo. Alhertson was first
team all-conference at the fourth
singles position in 1998. Also
returning are sophomores Julie

activities that they are involved in.
Sieg belongs to the Student Athletic
Advisory Council where he is a
goalkeeper coach in Monroeville.
Martin belongs to the Lake Erie
Soccer Club and is the coach of a
youth team.
Sieg and Martin's coach is Dan
Perritano, who was a goalie during
his college days at Slippery Rock
University and also has played at
several other locations.
Sieg said he enjoys playing for
Coach Perritano: "I love it, and it is
the reason that lam still here. We
began here at Behrend with fourteen
freshmen and now are only three left.
We have decided to stay at Behrend
instead of transferring to University
Park."
The two captains both agree that
their favorite experience at Behrend
was last year when they won the title
of Allegheny Mountain Collegiate
Conference champions. This season
the team has extremely tough
competition near and far from
Behrend. Over fall break the
Behrend Lions will be traveling to
Colorado for two games against
Colorado College and Mountain
State Billings. They will depart on
October 5 and return on October 10.
Tommy Sieg has been strong
in goal this season, but now
sports blonde hair.
So far, the team has defeated Hiram
College 2-0 and SUNY New Paltz
3-2. They also played several
nationally ranked teams in the past
two weeks, losing 3-1 to Fredonia
and losing to Bethany 3-1.
The continuous dedication and
hard work from their teammates has
shown Sieg and Martin that the Lions
play with a lot of heart, and that this
is one of the closest teams that
Behrend has ever had. The Lions'
next game will be at 3:30 p.m. on
Saturda , Se stember 2.3 at La Roche.
Zhang and Michelle Juneau are new
recruits on the team.
Play began for Penn State Behrend
on Saturday at 10:30 A.M. when they
swept the opening match against
Bethany 5-0. The Lions went on to
play John Carroll and won 4-1. Penn
State played Allegheny in the
championship game and lost 2-3.
Julie Leininger, AMCC Women's
Tennis Athlete of the Week, went 4-0,
winning all of her matches, finishing
in second place. Leininger was
named the Most Valuable Player of the
AMCC in 1999.
Penn State Behrend had a busy
agenda with matches scheduled on the
Sunday and Tuesday after the
Saturday Invitational. On Sunday,
Penn State Behrend heat Frosthurg 9-
0. Leininger won 6-0, 6-0, in AMCC
singles against Frosthurg and won at
number- one doubles. Behrend won
again on Tuesday, when they played
at La Roche and won 9-0.
Penn State Behrend's conference
record is 2-0 and their overall record
is 7-2. Their next matches are
September 23 at Frostburg and
September 24 at Penn State Altoona.

The Penn State Behrend women's
soccer team is back on the winning
track following this past weekend.
The women fell twice in a row last
week and began to rebound last
Thursday. Most of the games have
been close, but Behrend has pulled
them out.
Behrend took on Grove City last
Thursday, September 14. This game
went one minute into overtime until
Michelle Gutting ended it. Behrend
had 21 shots on goal, but did not
manage to score until the overtime
period. Michelle Malatesta had
three saves in goal for the shutout.
The game that took place this past
Saturday, September 16, was
televised. The opponent was Mount
Union, who had encountered trouble
of their own this season. Behrend
came away with the 2-0 victory,
scoring both goals early in the
contest. Betsy Cummings scored in
the twelfth minute and Laura Furko
added the second goal a minute later.
Malatesta had seven saves this time
around for the shutout.
These two victories allowed for
the women's soccer team to receive
national recognition. They moved
up in the National Soccer Coaches
Association of America (NSCAA)
Great Lakes poll. Behrend was

They stayed right with the Lions

This brought the match to an equal

Throughout the middle of the game
the Lions showed excellent

The enthusiasm of the Bengals

started with a quick 4-1 lead over
the Lions, but the Lions responded

Coach Dan Perritano has
something else to be proud of after
the recent victories; Perritano was
on the verge of career victory
number two hundred. He has
accumulated 198 victories in his
twelve-year coaching career.
Perritano's initial coaching job was
at the University of the Redlands in
California and then he moved to the
junior college level. Perritano came
to Behrend in 1993 having coached
the men to a 72-59-7 mark in eight
years and a 68-25-9 mark for the
women in six years. He adds to the
long line of successful coaches here
at Behrend, especially the late Herb
L,auffer, former men's tennis and
soccer coach.
The 199th victory came in the first
game of a soccer doubleheader on
September 20. The opponent, Pitt-
Bradford, could only manage one
shot on goal as Behrend won 3-0.
Bethany Cummings, Laura Furko,
and Jill Barbisch added the goals.
Michelle Gutting and Jen Baker
added the assists. The women
managed sixteen shots on goal.

The Lions' hitting talents were
unstoppable throughout the third
game. The Lions ended with a
commanding 15-4 win over the
Bengals.
The Bengals finally answered
with a rally to take a 10-5 lead over
the Lions early in the fourth game.
Behrend fought back to a tie at ten
points. This didn't stop the Bengals,
though. They continued on to a 13-
11 lead. A key side-out for the Lions
brought Good to the serving line
once again. She finished off the last
four points with strong support from
the whole team. The Lions ended
the match with a 15-13 win for a
total of 3 games to 1.

about two hours later. The Behrend
men's team blanked Pitt-Bradford 8-
0 for a convincing win. Mike Fry
had three goals. Aaron Pentz added
a goal and an assist, while James
Martin had two goals. The sterling
defensive performances by Behrend
continued as the men only allowed
one shot on goal as well. The men's
team may have gotten coach
Perritano his 200th victory, but it
was the women who got him close.
The women's team will face La
Roche on September 23 as they
continue play and continue their
battle to regain the AMCC
Championship.

The women's soccer team is
now 6-2 overall and 1-0 in
AMCC play.
Head Coach Cindy Jacobelli was
impressed with the maturity of this
young team. Jacobelli pointed out,
"The team started out slow in the
beginning, but pulled themselves
out—this takes a lot of maturity." As
conference play begins on Thursday,
this close match-up with the Bengals
gave the Lions quality competition
to get ready for the conference play.
Leading in the winning effort was
Danielle Bemis with 13 kills and 20
digs, along with Jessica
Niedermeyer with 12 kills and 24
digs. Also, Mary Good contributed
10 kills and 26 digs.
