Her presentation is the first in the 2000-2001 "American Dream in the New Millennium" Speaker Series at Penn State Behrend. Shirley served as the manager of the Mars Exploration Program and leader of the team that built the Sojourner Rover, and recently completed her autobiography about the experiences, Managing Martians: The Extraor dinary Story of a Woman's Lifelong Quest to Get to Mars—and of the Team Behind the Space Robot That Has captured the Imagination of the World. She chronicles the struggles and triumphs of the Pathfinder and Sojourner Rover teams, which carried out the Mars landing on July 4, 1997, and tells the ongoing saga of the Mars Global Surveyor. The story traces the descent into savagery of a group of British schoolboys who are stranded without adults some where in the South Pacific just after World War 2. UNIVERSITY PARK CAREER DAYS The annual University Park Career Day geared for seniors in non-technical majors (business and humanities) will be held on Tuesday, September 19, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Bryce Jordan Center. Behrend's Career Development Center (CDC) is sponsoring a bus for travel to and from University Park for this day. The bus will leave the Reed Union Building at 8:00 a.m. and will return there at 9:00 p.m. A sign up sheet is available in the CDC and seats will be reserved on a first come, first-served basis. Students must be registered in the Career Management System to attend. Maps, parking, and hotel information are available in the CDC. EMERGING LEADERS 2000 On Saturday, September 23, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., the Office of Student Activities and the Student Activity Fee will be sponsoring the Emerging Leaders 2000 Conference in the Reed Union Building. The conference will feature key speaker Jack Chambers, a professional student development consultant. This program is designed for those interested in learning more about becoming involved as a student and in developing personal skills for leadership and life. Join fellow Penn State students at University Park for All-U- Day, a day where students from all Penn State campuses can attend a Penn State football game. Tickets will be sold at a reduced rate of $l7 to students. The game takes place on November 4, but students can come up for the whole weekend and enjoy a tailgating party and other activities at University Park. Only 50 tickets are allotted to Behrend, so stop by the RUB Desk to complete the sign-up sheet. Bring Penn State ID and cash/check for each ticket.
