Dokken, Slaughter, Dear Jane, I have been having a problem with my ex-boyfriend and my roommate. 1 am very close with both of them, and we all hang out a lot. The problem is that they flirt with each other way too much, especially lately. I find myself feeling nervous to leave them alone together. I want to trust them, but a few times I’ve walked into our room to find them sitting really close together or with his hand on her leg. 1 have mentioned this to my boyfriend who told me not to worry since he and my roommate are just really close friends. What do you think? Nervous, No wonder you are unnerved! You have every right to be suspicious. While sitting close together may not constitute suspicion, his hand on her leg while you are out of the room certainly does. If they are sending off attraction/relationship vibes, you need to address it right away. You said that you talked to your boyfriend, but have you talked to your roommate? Sometimes girls understand each other better SOMETIMES. Point out that she may not like it if you hung all over her boyfriend (if there is one). If you talk to her, and she sounds just like your boyfriend (oh, we’re just really close friends ), I would suggest sitting them both down for a long talk. Do not accuse them of anything or tell them that you cannot trust them together. Instead, tell them that their flirtatious ways upset you (and throw in that other people are starting to wonder about the nature of their relationship). Ask them, as friends, to stop. And if they can’t stop when you have told them, seriously, that it ‘J-ane upsets you'? Do you want that quality in a friend or in a long-term relationship? If they can’t keep their hands where they belong, get rid of them both. Or, if the roommate situation is complicated, get rid of him now, her later. Dear Jane My new boyfriend of like two weeks doesn't ever want to touch me! He never touches me in the halls at school or holds my hand w hen we’re out to gether. I talked to him about it and he said that he isn’t really like that but now I am doubting if he really likes me as much as he tells me. He is re ally I mean really into his friends and he always has to be “ma cho,’’ you know? And I want to tell him that he doesn’t have to act like I'm not there around his friends.... HELP! Nervous Unsure, I think what you need to do here is put things in context. Other than the Public Display of Affection phobia and the weirdness-around-his-friends thing, how does this dude treat you? Is he generally kind to you? Does he make you laugh? Do you genuinely enjoy his company? You didn’t let on, so I’m guessing that for the time be ing you’re so annoyed by the no-PDA thing that it’s overshadowing every thing else in the relationship, which isn’t a good thing, especially since you’ve only been together a couple of weeks. If you answered yes to the above questions, it’s probably not fair to entirely dismiss this guy’s feelings for you based on his reluctance to, say, hold hands in the hallways. The thing to remember about the PDA thing is and Unsure that usually it’s not about you (you shouldn’t automatically feel rejected or unappreciated) it’s about him. Namely, how comfortable he is in general letting the world know he’s feeling all sweet about a girl, which is a totally vulnerable position for any guy to be in (especially a guy who has a “macho” persona going with his buds). Some guys and girls can take months before they feel comfortable holding hands in public. My advice, then, is to give it a little time that is, if you like enough other things about the rela tionship to stick it out. If over the next couple of months he doesn’t start to warm up to you and doesn’t start to acknowledge you when you’re around his friends, then tell him that his behavior is driving you away. You’re not going to be able to force him to be sweeter and more romantic, so it’s really not going to be worth yelling at him about all this. If it comes to that, just move on. Chances are, though, that he’ll get used to the idea of showing his affection for you and believe me, showing affection does take a lot of getting used to, especially for guys and the relationship will be a situ ation in which both of you can find new ways to be good to each other.
