PAGE 14, THE BEHREND BEACON, MARCH 17, 2000 Out 0 Unselfish Lakers? Must be Zen Buddhist Phil The faces are the same. The ex pectations are still to win a champi onship. And the spoiled Los Ange les Lakers still have their big-headed superstars with egos the size of Shaq's shoes and Kobe's still-grow ing afro. But there's one difference; the philosophical tactics of the Zen guru Phil Jackson has L.A. on their way to their first championship since 1988. It's always been a theory that great coaches are the ones that can come up with an offense that best fits the players that they have. Mavericks coach Don Nelson has always been unsuccessful trying to take his offen sive game plan from city to city, while Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich still tries to run his slow half-court offense despite the quick success of rookie guard Steve s ::::, , :,,'' BEHRENI) SP MEN'S BASKETB - - 80 R.I.T. 41 39 80 31 34 65 Behrend Behrcnd R I.T Behrend Player FG 3-point FT Points Lawrence 4-9 1 -1 2-3 II McKinney 0-0 0-0 0-0 0 Berchtold 3-3 0-0 1- I 7 Dunn 0-0 0-0 0-0 0 Orris 5-8 3-5 3-4 16 Willson 0-I 0-0 0-I 0 Hughes 9-12 0-0 8-8 26 Keith 7-12 6-10 0-0 20 Park 0-1 0-1 0-0 0 Totals 28-46 10-17 14-17 80 Assists: 19, Rebounds: 26, Blocks: 0. Jackson joined the Lakers after a year away from the game and is fu eled up for another run at a dynasty with a very talented, but selfish, team. Or at least they were selfish. You know that if Jackson could tame the pierced, tattooed and trouble-plagued Dennis Rodman, he could convince O'Neal and Bryant that they weren't as good as they thought they were. The only problem for the rest of the league is that O'Neal has grown a lik ing to the triangle, and is quickly turn ing into that dangerous player that he has always considered himself to be. O'Neal is the heavy favorite for the league MVP award, currently second in the league in scoring (28.5 ppg), second in rebounding (14.3 rpg) and first in field goal percentage (.569). The problem? You can't rely on him A TRACK ; 41041. Men's Results 300 m Run I. Michael Collins 7. Brian Pratt 3000 m Steplechase I. Tony David 2. Dennis Halaszynski 4x400 Relay I. Fordham 2. It doesn't seem that the clutch has been too crucial for the Lakers who are riding a 19-game winning streak, the third longest in NBA history. Jackson has the Lakers on top of the standings, looking down at teams like Portland, Utah, Indiana and San Antonio, with 18 games left in the season. One of the most intriguing parts of Jackson's coaching style is his philosophical ideas that he imposes on his players. His solution to get players to relate to his style of bas ketball and life, is to read. No, not scripts in their endorsement deals or their scat line for the night, but philo sophical books. Get yourself your own identity. Once Kobe establishes his identity as an all-around, unselfish player, the Lakers are bound for greatness. All the theories that the Lakers will never win a championship with all of the egos on the team, have quickly di minished with the guidance of the Zen-master. If Jackson's success continues, he can make a legitimate argument that he is the best basketball coach of all time. Sure it helps to have players with names like Jordan, Pippen, O'Neal and Bryant, but let's face it. The man got Shaq to read a book, Kobe to pass the ball, and the ego centric Lakers to run an actual of fense. What's next? Convincing the Lakers that the only way to win a championship is to win in the play offs? That would be amazing.
