Behrend, will present the lecture
Thursday, January 27, at 7:30 p.m. in
Otto Behrend Science Building 101.
The School of Science series is free
and open to the public.
The search for the cause of Mad
Cow and similar spongy brain dis
eases that affect different species of
animals, including humans, has a fas
cinating history. In the 1950 s scien
tist Carlton Gajdusek first described
a degenerative spongy brain disease
that was suspected to he a slow viral
infection resulting from cannibalism
among trihes in New Guinea. Later
.vork by another scientist, Stanley
Prusmer, determined that the actual
cause of these spongy brain diseases
was infectious proteins, or peons.

Roth Gajdusek and Pnisiner have won
Nobel Prizes in Medicine for their
work in this field. Warren is a gradu
ate of Allegheny College and received
his doctorate from Clemson Univer
sity. He conducted research on infec
tious proteins, or prions, during his
postdoctoral studies at the University
of Michigan department of neurology.
His talk will review the history of the
study of prions, explain how the ac
tion of prions is so unusual, and dis
cuss the potential link between Mad
Cow Disease and a new form of
neurodegenerative disorder.

What's Going on In
Student Government?
*Election! The SGA election will be February 2" and
3 rd outside of Bruno's. The election will till three open
senate seats and elect a University Faculty Senate
Representative. Look in next week's Beacon for infor
mation on the candidates.
*Spirit Station Last week, Bruno's and SGA hosted a
Spirit Station on the Bruno's stage. The Station went
wonderfully: we gave away over 150 free prizes (in
cluding 40 free pizzas), popcorn and hot chocolate, and
(hopefully) let a lot of people know about the basket
ball game that night. The winners of the three bigger
prizes are as follows: Jay Davids & Daryl Dambaugh
won PSU T-shirts and Tamara Bremner won the PSU
stuffed animal lion. You can pick up your prizes at the
RUB desk if you have not already picked them up!
*Tell Us What You Want!!! Student Government can
make changes on campus, but we need to know what
you, the student body, want to see happen. What needs
to change or improve at Behrend? What could make
your college experience better? Call us with ideas
(x 6220), come by the office or accost a senator in the
halls or at a meeting. The date of the SCA forum will
be announced next week.
The SGA office is located in the Reed Building, next to
the backroom, and meetings are held every Wednesday at
S:2OPM in Reed 114. Drop by the office with any con
cerns, questions or ideas!!
