Dr. James T. The School of Science series is free and open to the public. The search for the cause of Mad Cow and similar spongy brain dis eases that affect different species of animals, including humans, has a fas cinating history. In the 1950 s scien tist Carlton Gajdusek first described a degenerative spongy brain disease that was suspected to he a slow viral infection resulting from cannibalism among trihes in New Guinea. Later .vork by another scientist, Stanley Prusmer, determined that the actual cause of these spongy brain diseases was infectious proteins, or peons.
