THE BEHREND BEACON OVER THE EDGE Housing and Food Service Athlete of the Week Chris Hughes has been named the week's Food and Housing Athlete of the Week. He is the starting center for the men's basketball team (5-0). Hughes is one of the top big men in the east. After leading the Behrend Lions to the 1998-99 ECAC South ern Regions Championship and being named the Tournament's "MVP," he has supported the blue, white and reds efforts and helped them start the sea son a perfect 5-0. In the win over Elmira, Hughes hit Bxl4 from the field for 19 points, and had 6 re bounds, 4 assists and 3 blocks. Against the Wolverines of Grove City, he made 10 of 12 from the line to fin ish with a game-high 18, and earned 11 rebounds, and 3 blocks. To com plete the three-win week he knocked in 20 points, had 7 boards and 2 as sists in the game versus D' Youville. Hughes is a graduate of Brockway High School. Behrend beat Grove City 62-56, D' Youville 71-58, and conference ri val Laßoche 83-64 in the week's ac tion. "They've worked hard, they play together, and there's pretty good chemistry there," said Behrend Head Coach Dave Niland of the team thus far. "We've been fortunate in some of our games. We're 6-0, but we're not too far from 3-3, really. But, believe me, we're happy, and these guys know it's a fragile thing, be cause we've got some good leader ship." The men traveled to Grove City on Wednesday, December 1, and Women's basketball defeats La Roche in conference opener by Jason Snyder editor-in-chief The Behrend women's basketball team continues to stay ahead of last season's Allegheny Mountain Col legiate Conference Championship pace with a 6-3 record approaching the holiday break. Behrend captured victories against D'Youville and conference opponent La Roche, while falling to Wilmington. On Friday, December 3. the Behrend women hosted D'Youville in Erie Hall for the women's second home tournament of the season. The Lions dominated the game from start to finish, outscoring their opponent by 21 in the first half and 18 in the second half. Behrend scored a 90- 51 victory to move to 5-2 on the sea son. Tiffany Buck remained hot from behind the arc, shooting 4-9 for 12 points. Jackie Jackson privided a lift off the bench, scoring 18 points to lead the women, with Christine Charnock going for 13. The Lions outrebounded D' Youville, 44-32 and forced 25 turnovers. The Lions advanced to the cham pionship game against Wilmington and were defeated, 68-57. Carrie Nestor and Jen O'Lare were the only Lions to reach double-figures in the scoring column. Down 32-27 at the half, the Lions battled back on the strength of eighteen converted free throws to only two for the opposition, on 21 and three attempts, respectively. Despite shoot ing only 29% (7-24) from the floor, the Lions outscored Grove City 35-24 in the second half, and won 62-56. Center Chris Hughes turned in a big performance, with team highs of eigh teen points, eleven rebounds, and three blocked shots. Hughes also converted ten of twelve free throws. Forward Andy Lawrence scored seventeen and grabbed nine boards, and guard Ashley Orris scored fifteen. On Saturday, December 4, the Lions welcomed D' Youvillle to Erie Hall. Behrend got out of the gates quickly, and on the strength of 60% (15-25, 5- 1 1 three-pt) shooting, took a twelve point lead to the locker room at 39-27. The men proved just as strong down Eilerman scored 23 for the visitors to spark the victory. The loss moved the Behrend women to 5-3 on the season, entering conference play. Behrend opened their conference schedule this past Wednesday against La Roche where the women started where they left off last season, defeat ing the Redhawks, 59-54 in overtime. In front of 200 fans in attendance in Erie Hall, the Lions caught fire from the field in the first half, going 10-18 from the field for 56%. Behrend ed tered the locker room leading 31-25. La Roche's defense helped cool the Lions' touch in the second half, hold ing Behrend to just 17 points on just 21% shooting from the field. The teams ended regulation tied at 49. Behrend outscored their conference opponent 10-5 in the extra session to start the AMCC season 1-0. Buck and Erin Phillips both scored 13 for the Lions who sported a bal anced offensive attack. Phillips got to the free throw line 13 times in the con test, making nine. Behrend was outrebounded on the offensive glass, 20-11, keeping La Roche in the con test. Behrend will continue conference play this Saturday at Penn State Altoona. The women will then break until January 6 where they will play Grove City at home at 6:00 p.m. break. DECEMBER 10, 1999 the stretch, and won the game 71-58. Seniors Hughes and Lawrence once again had hot hands for the Lions, scoring twenty and fifteen, respec tively. Hughes also had a team high with seven boards. Orris grabbed five rebounds, scored seven points, and handed out a team-high five assists. Guard Matt Keith scored fifteen, all from long range, as he made five of ten three-point attempts. Forward John Park scored six points and grabbed four boards, all offensive. Behrend began conference play this past Wednesday, December 8, as Laßoche came to Erie Hall. The stel lar 83-64 win exorcised the demons of last year's bitter playoff defeat in the AMCC post-season tournament to which Behrend played host. NCAA Tournament bid "We've been waiting for these guys all summer, had to give them a little payback," Hughes said after the win. "We knew they were a talented team, but we came out and played pretty hard, and got the win." Behrend set the tone early, as an Ashley Orris three-pointer 3:39 into the contest gave the Lions a 12-6 lead. Behrend built on the lead until half time, and it grew to fifteen as they went to the locker room with the score 40-25. The teams traded baskets for most of the second half, with Behrend enjoying its biggest lead of 22 points with 5:06 to play. Hughes played well again in the middle, with team highs in points with sixteen, and rebounds with nine. Lawrence made three of four three point attempts and finished with fif teen points, eight rebounds, and four assists. Matt Keith scored eleven, forward Chris Lynn scored ten. For ward Andy Berchtold and Ashley Or ris each scored eight and each grabbed four boards. Behrend shot 53% (31/58) as a team, and held Laßoche to just 34% (23/67) shooting on the night. Behrend's last game before Christ mas break is an away game at Penn State Altoona, this Saturday, Decem ber 11, at 8:00 PM. The Lions will then participate in the Land of Magic ToUrnament in Daytona Florida, on December 27-28. They will face the University of Minnesota-Morris and the University of Wisconsin- Whitewater in that tournament.
