Don't Get me Started
Scoundrels, Scumbags, and
During the second game of this
year's World Series, Major League
Baseball selected 30 players to be
part of the All-Century Team. One
of the players to be selected was
former Cincinnati Reds superstar,
Pete Rose. Rose was a dominant
force in baseball during the 70s and
80s, which led him to the record
books. Pete, known as "Charlie
Hustle" to diehard baseball fans,
holds the Major League record for
hits in a career. But "Charlie
Hustle" hasn't been admitted into
baseball's hallowed Hall of Fame
even with all of his accomplish
ments on the field.
In 1989, Rose was under inves
tigation for allegedly betting on the
Cincinnati Reds, the team that he
managed. A 225-page report out
lining Rose's gambling practices
was released in 1989 and prompted

him to file for reinstatement one year
later.
The issue of Rose's lifetime ban
from baseball is a hot topic among
baseball fans. The majority of fans are
in favor of allowing Pete to be rein
stated so that he can be inducted into
the Hall of Fame. But, current com-

missioner Bud Selig stated that he has
no intention of allowing Rose to re
turn to the game. John Dowd, who
wrote the report about Rose in 1989,
feels that Rose shouldn't even be al
lowed to set foot on a Major League
field.
But the issue of Rose's reinstatement
didn't prompt me to write this column.
Rather, it was the interview by NBC
reporter Jim Gray on that night that got
me fired up. Minutes after the cer
emony ended, Gray, who is known for
his hard line style, held an interview
with Rose. Gray grilled Rose on the
gambling issue. He asked Rose why
he hadn't admitted that he bet on the
game, and he refused to back off the
topic. Rose responded to Gray's ques
tions by saying, "You know, I 'm sur
prised you're bombarding me with
this. I'm here to do an interview with
you on a great night, a great occasion.

Reds: the Pete Rose debate
You're bringing up something that
happened ten years ago."
Gray's interview received harsh
criticism from fans and players alike.
Fans watching the series swamped
their local NBC affiliates with hun
dreds of phone calls that scorned
Gray's interview. Several players
joined the mix by supporting Rose.
and pleading for his reinstatement.

New York Mets pitcher John Franco
said that Gray overdid it and that ten
years is enough of a punishment for
Rose. Yankee catcher Joe Girardi
echoed Franco's statements by say
ing that Rose deserves to be in
ducted into the Hall of Fame.
But this interview was about far
more than Pete Rose. This interview
represents the double standard in
sports and the lengths journalists are
willing to go to make a story. New
York Yankees outfielder Darryl
Strawberry, who has been in drug
rehab as many times as Monica
Lewinsky has been under President
Clinton's desk, is still allowed to
play in the Major Leagues and he is
often made out to be an excellent
person. Give me a break here folks,
someone who repeatedly breaks the
law should not be canonized as a
role model for youngsters. In addi

The problem is that scumbags like

Now I know that Rose most likely bet
on the Reds, but considering what
some other players have done who are
in the Hall of Fame, what Pete Rose
did mettles in comparison. It would
be a crime if Rose were to die and he
never made it into the "Hall." It's time
that Bud Selig swallowed his pride and
reinstated Pete. Maybe then more
baseball fans will like him.
