SPORTS Don't Get me Started Scoundrels, Scumbags, and During the second game of this year's World Series, Major League Baseball selected 30 players to be part of the All-Century Team. One of the players to be selected was former Cincinnati Reds superstar, Pete Rose. Rose was a dominant force in baseball during the 70s and 80s, which led him to the record books. Pete, known as "Charlie Hustle" to diehard baseball fans, holds the Major League record for hits in a career. But "Charlie Hustle" hasn't been admitted into baseball's hallowed Hall of Fame even with all of his accomplish ments on the field. In 1989, Rose was under inves tigation for allegedly betting on the Cincinnati Reds, the team that he managed. A 225-page report out lining Rose's gambling practices was released in 1989 and prompted .1 1 1 W, St, r • r - ; •r• r • Ir.) • r r 4- 4 111,41 1 IJI I )3 3 0 / I) _„ - - Final Standin I s Penn State Behrend Frostburg Pitt-Greensburg Lake Erie La Roche Pitt-Bradford Opponent Pitt-Greensburg Date Nov. 6 Nov. 7 Frostburg 1999 AMCC Championship Results Saturday, November 6 Penn State Behrend Frostburg Sunday, November 7 Penn State Behrend 2 vs. Frostburg A MCC Men's Soccer All-C. The agree ment banned Rose from baseball and related activities for life, but allowed him to file for reinstatement one year later. The issue of Rose's lifetime ban from baseball is a hot topic among baseball fans. The majority of fans are in favor of allowing Pete to be rein stated so that he can be inducted into the Hall of Fame. John Dowd, who wrote the report about Rose in 1989, feels that Rose shouldn't even be al lowed to set foot on a Major League field. But the issue of Rose's reinstatement didn't prompt me to write this column. Rather, it was the interview by NBC reporter Jim Gray on that night that got me fired up. Minutes after the cer emony ended, Gray, who is known for his hard line style, held an interview with Rose. Gray grilled Rose on the gambling issue. He asked Rose why he hadn't admitted that he bet on the game, and he refused to back off the topic. Rose responded to Gray's ques tions by saying, "You know, I 'm sur prised you're bombarding me with this. I'm here to do an interview with you on a great night, a great occasion. --J -r/t1): / I' I ; rf I /Y i r ..-)".(-) re' ire (135" 3) 41 1 - " Final Standin g s Penn State Behrend La Roche Frostburg Lake Erie Pitt-Bradford Date Opponent Nov. 6 Johns Hopkins 1999 ECAC Championship Results Saturday, November 6 Penn State Behrend WO i'/IE bY '3 VOLLEYBALL (12-1 6) _ Final Standin • s Frostburg La Roche Pitt-Bradford Penn State Altoona Penn State Behrend Pitt:Greensburg Lake Erie 1999 AMCC Championship Results Saturday, November 6 Frostburg Laßoche Frostburg AMCC Women's Voile Mary Good Penn State Behrend Tanya Deats Penn State Behrend For up to date sports scores around the clock call the SPORTSLINE at: (814) 898-6163 and Press 1 R E f) f--1 r r - r rt J r .. Yankee catcher Joe Girardi echoed Franco's statements by say ing that Rose deserves to be in ducted into the Hall of Fame. But this interview was about far more than Pete Rose. This interview represents the double standard in sports and the lengths journalists are willing to go to make a story. New York Yankees outfielder Darryl Strawberry, who has been in drug rehab as many times as Monica Lewinsky has been under President Clinton's desk, is still allowed to play in the Major Leagues and he is often made out to be an excellent person. Give me a break here folks, someone who repeatedly breaks the law should not be canonized as a role model for youngsters. Their own stupid ity, ignorance, or total lack of educa tion? The problem is that scumbags like Jim Gray will go out of their way to. trash legends like Pete Rose, but wheri it comes to some new age, overpaid superstar they don't mutter a peep. Now I know that Rose most likely bet on the Reds, but considering what some other players have done who are in the Hall of Fame, what Pete Rose did mettles in comparison. It would be a crime if Rose were to die and he never made it into the "Hall." It's time that Bud Selig swallowed his pride and reinstated Pete. Maybe then more baseball fans will like him.
