Events THE LOGANWINTERGARDEN SERIES: THE CAVANI STRING QUARTET Music at Noon: The Logan Wintergarden Series continues its tenth anniversary season with a per formance by the Ca‘ ani String Quar tet on Thursday, Oct. 14th, at Behrend College. Audiences arc invited to bring a brown-hag lunch to this noontime event, which is free and open to the public. The Cavani String Quartet was the very first group to play for Music at Noon, which was founded by Kay Logan in 1989 and is supported by the Harry A. Logan Jr. Foundation. Lo gan created this unique series as a way of bringing classical music to all au diences, including children. The Washington Post states, - The Cavani String Quartet succeeds like few oth ers in communicating the fun of mu sic-making and the sheer joy of bal ancing timbres and weaving sound." The group received the prestigious Naumberg Chamber Music Award in 1989 and the ASCAP-Chamber Mu sic America Award for Adventurous Programming of Contemporary Mu sic in 1998. Violinists Mari Sato and Annie Fullard, cellist Merry Peckham, and violist Kirsten Docter are deeply committed to the teaching of chamber music and have developed a series of educational and outreach programs fora wide variety of settings and for audiences of all ages. In addi tion to their current residency at the Cleveland Institute of Music, the en semble has performed mini-residen cies at colleges, universities, and in communities throughout the United States. FILM SERIES PULLS INTO CENTRAL STATION AT BEHREND The International Film Series at Behrend continues with Central Sta tion, to he shown at 7 p.m. on Mon day, October 18th, in the Reed Union Building Lecture Hall. In this moving film, Director Walter Salles gives the audience a taste of life on the road in Brazil and the lives of a bitter, middle-aged ex schoolteacher and an orphaned young boy. The teacher, Dora, who works at Central Station, writes let ters for the illiterate masses from her stand, but rarely sends them out. One day, she comes across a letter that she wrote on behalf of a woman with a little boy in search of his father. The two begin their journey through life together. The boy is a stubborn and resilient brat hero who pushes Dora into being his protector and guide, while she drinks and complains, and gradually warms to the role. Salles strives to convince the audience that when you believe you're alone in the world, you never know where you'll find home, or for that matter, family. OPEN HOUSE NIGHTS IN ASTRONOMY Second in line for the Open House Nights in Astronomy is "The Nature of Space" presented by Dr. Roger Knacke, Director of the Behrend School of Science on Thursday. Octo- ~~ii '~J ~`;~Yf'~~i' '~ ~a'Ki'i~' At the past meeting of Commuter Council, the idea of selling stressballs for a fund-raiser was brought up to the membership. The request for money was submitted last week for the Wish-a- Thon. The Commuter Mixer will be held on October 16th from 3 until 6 p.m. in the Wilson Picnic Grove. The rain site will be the Reed Commons. Volunteers are needed for publicity and shopping. Also, volunteers are badly needed to man the Commuter Council pumpkin painting table at Cider Rock from 4 until 7 p.m. on October 15th. Again, help with signs and shopping would be greatly appreciated. Commuter Council will be sponsoring a joint event with the Lion Entertainment Board for an audience appreciation night with free pizza and beverages. The meeting with Dr. John Lilley, Mr. John Ream, and Mr. Bill Donahue was very productive. Cross walks will be labeled below Erie Hall and on Jordan Road.
