The calendar is intended for Behrend notices and events. SPRING COMMENCEMENT The Spring 1999 Commencement ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 15, at noon on the Reed Union Building lawn. In case of inclement weather, two ceremonies will be held. The first will begin at 12:00 noon and the second at 2:3opm, both in Erie Hall. Seniors who intend to participate in the graduation ceremony must purchase a cap and gown from the bookstore. Prices are as follows: Baccalaureate-black (keeper) $22.75, Associate- blue (Keeper) $22.75, Graduate- black cap gown, hood (keeper)- $46.00 and Graduate black cap, gown, hood (rental)-$35.25. The deadline to order caps and gowns is April 9. Beginning April 6, graduation announcements may be purchased on a walk-in basis from the Media and Instructional Support Center (MISC) in the Academic Building. The cost is 35 cents for each announcement. ELM CITY ENSEMBLE AT BEHREND APRIL 13 Music at Noon: The Logan Wintergarden Series will close its 1998-99 season with a performance by the Elm City Ensemble on Tuesday, April 13 at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College. Guests are invited to bring a brown-bag lunch to the noontime concert, which takes place in the Wintergarden of the Reed Union Building. All performances in the Logan Series are free and open to the public. This award-winning chamber music ensemble was formed in 1995 at Yale University and includes graduates of Juilliard, Eastman, and the Mozarteum in Salzburg. Opening to critical acclaim, throughout the 1996-97 season Elm City Ensemble received the top prizes of four national chamber music competitions and other prizes from the Contemporary Record Society’s National Chamber Music Competition and the Pro Piano Competition in New York. Members of the quartet include Garrick Zoeter, clarinet; Ingrid Sweeney, violin, Rebecca Patterson, cello, and Jessica Bruser, piano. As much as they appreciate music written Elm City Ensemble in the past, they are very much fans contemporary classical music and have found that a winning formula for the group. We try to break down barriers with our audiences and invite them to open up their ears to new possibilities, said Bruser. A relatively young group, the Elm City Ensemble is already recognized for its interpretation of contemporary musical pieces. They have played at the Norfolk Music Festival, the International Festival of Arts and Ideas in New Haven, the Winners Concert of the Carmel Competition, the Winners Concert of the FischofT Competition, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral. BEHREND HOSTS ENGINEERING EDUCATORS CONFERENCE Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, will host the 1999 North Central Section regional American Society for Engineering Educators (ASEE) conference on Thursday and Friday, April 8-9. Representatives from more than 34 different academic institutions covering 14 states will collectively share ideas that encourage continuous improvement in the quality of engineering and engineering technology education. The conference theme is Reshaping Engineering and Engineering Technology. His lecture, which is free and open to the public, will take place in the Otto Behrend Science Building. Terzian has been associated with the Arecibo Observatory since 1965. His areas of study include the physics of the interstellar medium, HII regions, the evolution of late type stars, binary galaxies, colliding galaxies, and the physics of planetary nebulae. His current work uses the Hubble Space Telescope to study the detailed structure of planetary nebulae. Terzian’s lecture will explore the universe from a historical perspective, including modern cosmological theories developed using the scientific method. His presentation includes astronomical slides taken with the world’s largest telescopes and with cameras from spacecraft. Terzian’s lecture concludes the 1998-99 Penn State Behrend Open House Nights in Astronomy Series. Astronomical observing will follow the lecture, weather permitting. It takes place in the Reed Union Building Commons and is free and open to the public. Schroeder was elected to Colorado’s First Congressional District seat in 1972 and went on to serve 12 terms, making her the longest-serving woman in the House of Representatives. An outspoken and independent voice within the Democratic Party, Schroeder was Dean of Congressional women and co chaired the Congressional Caucus on Women’s Issues for ten years. She served on the House Judiciary Committee, the Post Office and Civil Service Committee, and was the first woman to served on the House Armed Services Committee. Under Schroeder’s leadership, the Caucus on Women’s Issues launched an effort to improve women’s health policies by submitting a comprehensive legislative package, the Women’s Health Equity Act, and investigating gender discrepancies ■ in health research and services. As chair of the House Select committee on Children, Youth, and Families from 1991-93, she saw the Family and Medical Leave Act and the National Institutes of Health Revitalization Act passed in 1993. In 1995, the year she retired undefeated from the House, she was named to the national women’s Hall of Fame and labeled by Oliver North as one of the country’s 25 most dangerous politicians. Schroeder, a 1964 graduate of Harvard Law School, currently serves as president and CEO of the Association of American Publishers, the national trade organization of the U.S. Book Publishing industry. She is the author of two books, Champion of the Great American Family, and 24 Years of Housework and the Place is Still a Mess. The Penn State Behrend Speaker Series is sponsored by the Office of Student Affairs and is partially funded by the John Nesbit Rees and Sarah Hennc Rees Charitable Foundation and the PNC Corporation.
