She is 56% accurate in field goals and 77% in free throws "Rookie of the year is a great ac complishment for Phillips”, says coach Fornari. “She was a whole lot for us this year. She was a big reason we were so successful this year,” concluded Fornari. As far as Phillips herself, she is modest and doesn’t like to com ment on her play, but she does like to boast about the success of the team. “We played well together all year, and I’m very happy we ended the season on a good note by win ning the AMCC,” says Phillips. It was nice to see our players pull through at the end.” Phillips and Nestor led the Lions with 20 and 19 points, respectively. “We went to our offense that really isolated Nestor on the side with Phillips. And that was the key, because if they were to stop Nestor, they wouldn’t be able to stop Phillips. If they were going to stop Phillips, they couldn’t stop Nestor,” commented Fornari. O'Lure added 11 hard-fought points in the paint. Despite being held scoreless, Buck finished with five rebounds and two assists. Pitt-Bradford had four players reach double-figures as Lindsay hit for 12 points followed by Blake and Figley (11) and Miller with 10. The postgame ceremonies consisted of the trophy presentation to the Behrend Lions followed by the traditional cutting down of the nets in front of the 250 Behrend fans in attendance. All ten of the Lady Lions’ players and the coaches took home a piece of Behrend history, as they captured their first ever AMCC crown. The win moved Behrend to a final record of 10-2 in the AMCC and 17- 9 record overall. The Lions went 11 -3 to finish the season after a 6-6 Coach Fornari reached the century mark for career wins with the victory. Her career mark at the helm is 100-56. “The fact that it was the championship win, I’ll remember my 100th win a lot more. It was just a really neat way to get your 100th win.” Fornari also commended Rob Wittman, Amy Stranahan and Becky Reed who have been in the program for all 100 wins. In this 1998-99 season, Fornari was also named the AMCC Coach of the Year with Lake Erie’s A 1 Mielcarek. She reflected, “I enjoyed coaching this year. I enjoyed my team. It made it that much more special.” Behrend also had three players receive 1999 AMCC All-Conference Awards. Although the Lady Lions questionably didn’t have any first team players, they did put three of their names on the second team. Junior Carrie Nestor, sophomore Jen O’Lare and freshman Erin Phillips all received AMCC recognition for their play this season. Phillips was also named the AMCC Newcomer of the Year. Nestor finished the season with stats that backed up her all-around play. She averaged 8.1 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 5.7 apg, and 3.2 spg. “She’s a leader and the rest of the stuff she does is because she's a great player. There’s a package there that we recognize as AMCC Regular Season Standings AMCC Overall Record 8-2 15-9 8-2 16-6 7-3 10-14 0-10 8-16 First Round a group,” Fornari said. O’Lare ranked high on the Lions in the scoring column and rebound column with 11.7 ppg and 6.3 rpg. Said Fornari, “O’Lare has exploded into a player. If she is not guarded, she is going to score.” Phillips led the Lions in both major categories of scoring and rebounds with 13.3 ppg and 6.7 rpg. “Her potential is above most freshmen. She’s skillful, a smart player. She plays hard.” Of O’Lare and Phillips, Fornari said, “They were our go to.” Although Fornari recognizes the talent of those three players, she is more so impressed with the togetherness of her team. “’Team’ is a true word. I just liked how much of a ‘team’ they were.” Overall, the Lady Lions have set a strong foundation for the future ol Behrend women’s basketball. The women will lose no players to graduation this year, but will lose Carrie Nestor and Tiffany Buck after next season The Behrend women have taken over the reigns of the AMCC and have avenged last season’s disappointment. Next season will see the same team hoping to retain the conference title as defending champions. Of the experience, Fornari reflected, "Sunday was overwhelming; probably one of the best days our program’s experienced. A lot of fun, a lot of energy. The players got a reward for their hard work.” Pitt-Bradford 30 26 56 Behrend 35 26 61 Behrend Player FG 3-point FT Points Buck 0-5 0-3 0-0 0 Nestor 6-8 0-0 7-8 19 Sanders 2-4 1-2 0-0 5 O’Lare 5-14 0-0 1-2 11 Phillips 6-14 0-0 8-13 20 McDivitt 0-0 0-0 0-0 0 Jackson 1-4 0-0 0-0 2 Costanzo 0-0 0-0 0-0 0 Weigold 1-1 0-0 0-0 2 Charnock 0-1 0-0 2-2 2 Totals 21-51 1-5 18-25 61 Assists: 12, Rebounds: 34.
