MeCraeken battled like true cham
pions and took the victory 10-6.
"There was a lot of pressure on us
to um this match, but Ivan and I
handled it well and we came out on
top." commented Carlson.
The win placed the netters record
at 4-7 heading into the conference
championships at Frostburg State
(located in Maryland). The team
headed south to Maryland Friday for
a clash with rival Lake Eric. The
long van ride slowed the netters in
the early stages of the match. How
ever. the Lions regained their poise
and took it to Lake Erie. The final
score of the match was a convincing
SI. The lone loss was suffered in a
three set three hour marathon at sixth
singles by Phil Defabio. Defabio
battled through a severe illness
which was apparently caught during
the team's stop for lunch in Pitts
huieh.
"They must have slipped something
in my food, because I felt terrible all
day and through most of the night,”
described Defabio.

Luckily Defabio's illness wasn't
contagious, but his never say die at
titude was as the netters awoke the
next morning to battle Frostburg
State in the match to decide the first
ever AMCC Champion. The Lions
came out with fire in their eyes as
they breezed through the doubles 3-

singles match to the final score, 8-1.

The win ensured the Lions of their

Keenan also saw his dream of a win-

finished with an 11-7 record.
“This team is definitely heading in
the right direction, We won our con

AMCC
by Dylan Stewart

The Lions softball team were
forced this week to play both bad
news bears squads Lake Erie and
Laßoche, before having to adjust to
l ace a real challenge at the end of
the week in the name of Fredonia
State College.
Behrend may have had a lough
time adjusting from one extreme to
another, as they started their week
off by easily smashing both Lake
Erie and Laßoche, before getting
handed two defeats by Fredonia.
Although the two losses were by
no means welcome to the Lions,
head coach Cindy Jacobelli thinks

“We need to hit the ball and stay
mentally focused to win the
AMCC,” said Jacobelli. “We are
confident that our team is very ca
pable of doing both those things and
coming away with a title,” com
mented Jacobelli.
The Lions started their week out
by beating Laßoche unmercifully
by a score of 26-3, before Laßoche
forfeited the second game in the
doublehcader sweep.
Behrend banged out eighteen hits
on offense, while only allowing
Laßoche three hits in game one.

The Lions next moved on to
smash Lake Erie by scores of 13-1,
and 14-3.
Beth Calhoun was solid on the hill
in game one, as she gave up only
three runs on five hits, while strik-
ing out seven in six innings of work
Calhoun also produced offen
sively, as she went 2-4, with two
triples and two runs scored.
Mandy Bodnor was 3-3 at the
plate, with two RBl’s and one
double, while both Lisa Fox and
Meeghan Trumbull chipped in with
two hits apiece.

A trio of Lions provided the of
fense for Behrend, as Lisa Fox,
Mandy Bodnor, and Beth Calhoun
each had three base knocks in the
winning effort
The Lions finally ran into some
trouble at the end of the week as they
dropped a doubleheader to Fredonia
State by scores of 0-3, and 3-5.
The offense seemed to be miss-
ing in game one, as the Lions came
for
up with only four hits, as they lost
by a score of 0-3.
Beth Calhoun gave it her best ef
fort, as she gave up only two earned
runs on nine hits, while striking out
four.
Mandy Bodnor was the only Lion
to show up at the plate, going 2-3.
with two singles.
Game two was another case of
missing bats, as the Lions pitching
and defense held up only to have the
oftense MIA, as Behrend lost by a
score of 3-5.
Mandy Bodnor went six innings
of work, allowing three earned runs
on four base hits, while striking out
two and walking three.
Once again the Lions only
came up with only four hits in
the loss, with Lisa Fox leading
the way going 2-3, with two
single tallies.
Looking ahead to the
AMCC tourney, freshman
slugger Meeghan Trumbull was op
timistic as she declared, “I think if
we go in with something positive,
we will come out with something
positive.”
The Lion softball squad move
their overall record to 15-16, while
moving their AMCC record to 11-
3.
Behrend will travel to Pitt-
Bradford this weekend for the
AMCC championship, before dos
ing out their season next week with
two doubleheaders on the road.
