April 23. 1998 Men’s tennis wins AMCC championship by Art Faix skiff u f iler The Penn Stale Behrend men's tennis team finished their season ith a Hurry of positive results. The netters started with the nail biting 5- 4 \ tetorv over Fredonia last Wednes da\ The mateh was tied at 4-4 with onlv the second doubles mateh re maining. Matt Carlson and Ivan MeCraeken battled like true cham pions and took the victory 10-6. "There was a lot of pressure on us to um this match, but Ivan and I handled it well and we came out on top." commented Carlson. The win placed the netters record at 4-7 heading into the conference championships at Frostburg State (located in Maryland). The team headed south to Maryland Friday for a clash with rival Lake Eric. The long van ride slowed the netters in the early stages of the match. How ever. the Lions regained their poise and took it to Lake Erie. The final score of the match was a convincing SI. The lone loss was suffered in a three set three hour marathon at sixth singles by Phil Defabio. Defabio battled through a severe illness which was apparently caught during the team's stop for lunch in Pitts huieh. "They must have slipped something in my food, because I felt terrible all day and through most of the night,” described Defabio. The Lions came out with fire in their eyes as they breezed through the doubles 3- 0 and surrendered only a mere singles match to the final score, 8-1. “I don’t know what got into that kid, he just couldn’t keep his mouth shut, I guess,” tennis player Ivan McCracken Ivan McCracken won the featured singles match, as his opponent was defaulted for excessive use of ver bal profanities. “I don’t know what got into that kid, he just eouldn’t keep his mouth shut, I guess," described McCracken. The win ensured the Lions of their first of what hopes to be many AMCC Championships. Coach Keenan also saw his dream of a win- ning season come true as the Lions finished with an 11-7 record. “This team is definitely heading in the right direction, We won our con ference and competed strongly out side the AMCC," stated Keenan. Behrend may have had a lough time adjusting from one extreme to another, as they started their week off by easily smashing both Lake Erie and Laßoche, before getting handed two defeats by Fredonia. The Lions started their week out by beating Laßoche unmercifully by a score of 26-3, before Laßoche forfeited the second game in the doublehcader sweep. Behrend banged out eighteen hits on offense, while only allowing Laßoche three hits in game one. Beth Calhoun was solid on the hill in game one, as she gave up only three runs on five hits, while strik- ing out seven in six innings of work Calhoun also produced offen sively, as she went 2-4, with two triples and two runs scored. Mandy Bodnor was 3-3 at the plate, with two RBl’s and one double, while both Lisa Fox and Meeghan Trumbull chipped in with two hits apiece. Game two was another blowout, as the Lions prevailed by a score of freshman slugger Meeghan Trumbull Mandy Bodnor threw a one-hit ter, while giving up one run and striking out seven. A trio of Lions provided the of fense for Behrend, as Lisa Fox, Mandy Bodnor, and Beth Calhoun each had three base knocks in the winning effort The Lions finally ran into some trouble at the end of the week as they dropped a doubleheader to Fredonia State by scores of 0-3, and 3-5. The offense seemed to be miss- ing in game one, as the Lions came for up with only four hits, as they lost by a score of 0-3. Beth Calhoun gave it her best ef fort, as she gave up only two earned runs on nine hits, while striking out four. Mandy Bodnor was the only Lion to show up at the plate, going 2-3. with two singles. Game two was another case of missing bats, as the Lions pitching and defense held up only to have the oftense MIA, as Behrend lost by a score of 3-5. Mandy Bodnor went six innings of work, allowing three earned runs on four base hits, while striking out two and walking three. Once again the Lions only came up with only four hits in the loss, with Lisa Fox leading the way going 2-3, with two single tallies. Looking ahead to the AMCC tourney, freshman slugger Meeghan Trumbull was op timistic as she declared, “I think if we go in with something positive, we will come out with something positive.” The Lion softball squad move their overall record to 15-16, while moving their AMCC record to 11- 3. Behrend will travel to Pitt- Bradford this weekend for the AMCC championship, before dos ing out their season next week with two doubleheaders on the road.
