Thursday, April 9, /998 Behrend baseball wins first ever AMCC matchup by Dylan Stewart sports editor The Behrend baseball team closed out their week winning four of their last six games to up their record to an 11 - 6 season tally. Although four of six wins might sound like a successful week, the Lion squad came away feeling like they had been kissed by a great aunt. "We should have a record of at least 13 - 4 right now," said senior captain Marc Burchanowski. "The two games we lost were inexcusable, and every body on the team would agree with that," added Burchanowski. "I think our lack of experience had something to do with the two let downs," said assistant coach Bill Vitron. The bright spot of the week came with the Lions winning their first ever AMCC conference games when they traveled down to kick Pitt-Greensburg by scores of 8 -5, and 11 - 3. "The conference games are some thing we have been gearing up for for nearly a year," said head coach Paul Benim. "It felt good to go to Greensburg and earn two AMCC vic tories," added Benim. Junior Ryan Smith was a fire breathing monster on the day, as he went 7 -8, with eight RBl's, 5 runs scored, and two (bombs) homeruns. The six RBl's Smith came away with in the second game sets a new school record. The Lions prevailed in game one by a score of 8 - 5. Sophomore Rob Green picked up his fourth win in a row to set his record at 4 - 0. Green worked five innings, strik ing out five and giving up only one hit. Justin Kline, Morgan Saeler, and Ryan Smith came on to close out the last two innings for the Lion victory. "Our pitching staff has performed admirably," said Benim "They are doing a very solid job and giving us the opportunity to win," added Benim. Ryan Smith led the offense going 3 -4, including a homer, two RBl's, and two runs scored. The Lions banged out fourteen hits in game two, to win handily by a score of I I - 3. Pitcher Ryan Frederick laid down the hammer as he struck out eight in five innings of work, while only al lowing a stingy three hits to pick up the victory. Freshmen Joe Thompson came on to close out the game's final two in nings, striking out two with one hit allowed. "Both Frederick and Green domi nated the Greensburg team," said Benim. "Green only gave up one hit in five innings, and Frederick struck out seven of nine hitters at one point in the second game," finished Benin). Ryan Smith led the offense once again in the second game, going 4 - 4 with six RBl's, three runs scored, and one home run. Sophomore shortstop David Will iams also had a tremendous game at the plate, as he was 3 - 4 with a triple and three RBl's. Corey Walters and Matt Slavonic also added two hits for the Lions in triumph Earlier in the week, Behrend started their week off by splitting with Grove City by scores of 2- 1, and 2 - 5. Rob Green shut down the Grove 1 I City offense in game one to carry the Lions to victory 2 - I. Green went the seven inning dis tance, giving up only one run on four hits, while striking out nine. Jeremy Brubaker and Ryan Smith each had two hits for the Lions, while Corey Walters and Shawn Headley provided the two RBl's for the Lion victory. The Lion bats fell asleep in game two, as they were only able to pro duce two runs on five hits during the game as they fell by a score of 2 - 5. Ryan Smith pitched seven strong innings, striking out six, while giving up five runs on nine hits. Next up was a twinbill against Hil bert College in which the Lions again split by scores of 14 -1, and 2 - 4. Game one was a blowout as the Lions mashed thirteen hits for four teen runs, to prevail by a score of 14 - Ryan Frederick pitched a gem, fir ing five scoreless innings, giving up only one hit and striking out nine. Freshmen James Calpin came on to close out the final two innings by giv ing up one unearned run and striking out three. Marc Burchanowski was 3 - 4 at the plate, with three runs scored and one RBI. David Oldach and Matt Slavonic each knocked out two hits. while each driving in three runs The bench water of the Lions in tlh second game was seemingly again "slipped a mickey, - as the Behrend bats mysteriously fell asleep to again drop the second contest by a wore , 2 - 4. Although sophomore hurler Coley Walters pitched well enough to win the ballgame by giving up only three earned runs on four hits, the I.ion ol fense came up short in the saddening! defeat. Walters also finished the game with nine strikeouts Joe Thompson was the only Lien to come away with two baseknocks for Behrend in defeat. The Lions have a busy week ahead of them starting next Monday as they play ten games in eight days. Before that stretch however comes a very important road match against AMCC rival Frosthurg State. as the Lions travel to Frosthurg for a Sat LE day doubleheader. The Lions return home next week with a double dip against Theil on Monday at I: 00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m Behrend will then host ANICC lye La Roche on Tuesday, with games at both 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. The doubleheader will include a free tail gate party, where both hot dogs and soda will he provided to hoth students and faculty.
