Behrend baseball team ends up 2-2 in Maryville, taking 3rd place Burchanowski and Brubaker named to all-tourney team by Dylan Stewart sports editor The Behrend Lions baseball team recently finished up a solid past weekend, as they traveled down to play a tournament in Maryville, Tennessee, coming away with a 2 - 2 record, and a third place finish. The Lions now move their over all record to a respectable 7 -4, with the toughest part of their season schedule behind them. "We have played a lot of quality teams so far," said senior captain Marc Burchanowski. "Although our schedule is by no means going to get easy the rest of the way, I think we have a chance to put it in gear and come away with around twenty five wins by the end of our season" added Burchanowski. Brubaker was 6 - 10 through the tournament at the plate, with a team high eight runs scored, five stolen bases, two home runs, and seven walks. Burchanowski was 7 - 17 through out the tournament, with a team high seven hits and six RBl's, not to men tion a home run, double, and three stolen bases. On day one of the tournament, the Lions crew smacked Bethany by a score of 20 -4, before bowing out to host school and tournament cham pion Maryville, by a score of 5 - 4. The Behrend offense hit Bethany before they even knew what had happened, as they reeled off 13 first inning runs, aided by eight hits and five Bethany errors. "Bethany is actually a pretty good team," said sophomore Shawn Headley. "It was real nice to beat them like that seeing as though they have beaten us every time we have met in the last few years," added Headley. Shawn Headley came up with a big offensive performance as he cracked three hits, while also knock ing in four runs for the Lions. Marc Burchanowski launched a home run for one of his two hits, while Matt Slavonic and David Wil liams each came away with two hits apiece. Sophomore pitcher Rob Green tired a gem, as he picked up the win going five innings of work, allow ing only one hit and striking out eight to move his record ahead to 2 - 0. Ryan Frederick pitched four solid innings, giving up five runs, only three of which were earned. Junior Ryan Smith came on in the final two innings to shut down the Maryville offense, allowing only one hit and striking out two. Offensively the Lions were led by sophomore shortstop David Will iams who drove in two runs with a pair of base knocks. "We would have won that game if we would have done the little things a little better," said assistant coach William Vitron. "Without the mental mistakes in that game we would have taken home the tourna ment championship," added Vitron. Day two proved to be not much different than day one, as the Lions won their first game against Oberlin by a score of 9 -2, before falling to Urbana by a mark of 11 - 3. The Lions started out slowly in the first game against Oberlin, be fore busting out in the fifth and sixth innings to seal the win 9 - 2. Jeremy Brubaker was a machine on offense, as he banged out three today!" exclaimed Weber. Weber also noted his new train- ing as a key to his recent success. Wes Miller also paced the Netters with two victories. "My serve was on fire today, I could do no wrong," declared Miller. All systems are go as the team heads into a difficult weekend of tennis. Corey Walters was strong on the mound as he moved his pitching record to 2 -0, as he struck out three and walked two. The Lions next bowed out to Ur bana later in the day by a score of 11-3. "That loss was simply a case of them hitting the ball really well, and us not really hitting the ball at all. We just had an off game at the plate," said sophomore Corey Walters. The Lions next swing in to action today as they host their first home game doubleheader of the year against Grove City at both 1:00 p.m, and 3:00 p.m. The Lions will then host Hilbert on Saturday at both 1:00 p.m, and 3:00 p.m. Behrend will play their first conference game when they travel down to play Pitt - Greensburg next Tuesday at 1:00 p.m. Gamma Invitational will keep the team busy as seven teams travel to Erie to compete. "We've assembled a tough draw for our tournament, however, I ex pect good things from our squad," said Coach Keenen. The weekend is topped off with the start of the AMCC season with a match with division rivals, Frostburg State and Lake Erie.
