Lions slide to end regular season 16-8 Men's basketball team begins AMCC tournabents Saturday at Pitt-Bradford by Dylan Stewart sports editor The men's basketball tean, is com ing off somewhat of a difficult week after dropping their last two games of the year to lose their chance to host the AMCC tournament, while also dropping their AMCC mark to 7 - 3 and moving their overall record to 16 - 8. The Lions also missed their op portunity to break the all- time Be hrend record for wins in a season (16), in their final two chances of the season. By losing their final two games, the Lions will now have to travel to Pitt - Bradford on Saturday for the first round of the AMCC tournament where they will play the winner of Lake Erie and Laßoche at 1:00 p.m. Women who plan to become pregnant should consult their doctors about taking a daily supplement that micrograms of folic acid to help reduce the risk of certain birth The week started out with the Li ons being upset by Pitt- Greensburg 76 - 64 on their own home floor. Although the Lions got off to a pretty good start by taking a 21 - I 1 lead midway through the first half, their hot shooting quickly cooled off as they never once held the lead again in the second half. The closest the Lions came in the second half occured when freshman Ashley Orris nailed a three- pointer with two minutes left to close the score to 65 - 64. Pitt - Greensburg then went on to score the last 11 points of the game as they sealed the victory 76 - 64. "We had wide - open looks, but we just didn't make them," said head coach Dave Niland. The Lions next suffered a heart breaker just two days later with a 73 - 71 loss to Pitt - Bradford on the road at the buzzer. The Pitt - Bradford Panthers fin ished their season in first place in the AMCC at 10 -0, while moving their overall record to 20 - 4. The Panthers featured and inside outside combination of guard Pat Cullinan, who carried a 21.7 scor ing average into the game, and lived up to his scoring average with a 26 point performance, while also dish ing out 7 assists. Center Shaun Redman hit Behrend up for 20 points while also grabbing six rebounds. The winners shot an impressive 60% (29 - 48) from the field com pared to Behrend's 42% (21 - 50). The Lions stayed in the game with their impressive 85% (18 - 21) from the free- throw line, and by hitting 11 - 24 (46%) from the 3 - point line. "We played well the whole game," said junior guard Matt Plizga. "We just could have done the little things a little better. We need to play our absolute best to win the AMCC tour nament. We can't have any mental breakdowns," added Plizga. Once again Brock Bovaird pro vided the offense as he scored a team - high 22 points, while also coming up big defensively with 3 steals. Brian Emick had a solid perfor mance as he grabbed a team high 9 rebounds, banged in 13 points, and dished out 4 assists. Jason Paloskey also chipped in with 14 points and 5 assists. If the Lions win their first AMCC tourney game on Saturday, they will play in the championship game on Sunday the 29th at 2:00 D.M. at Pitt - Bradford. "When the clock's running out, he makes a lot of shots." Guard Matt Plizga added, "Brock has been pretty consistent all year. He's playing well in pretty much all aspects of the game." Brock is majoring in psychology here at Behrend. He plans to attend graduate school, and hopes to some day work in the field of industrial psychology. Brock attended Brockway High School, where he played both bas ketball and football. In his spare time, Brock enjoys playing acoustic guitar and listening to bootlegs.
