BaXter's lecture will describe basic properties of granular matter such as soil, seed, and pharmaceutical powders, which have a variety of industrial applications. Parker's poetry has appeared in magazines including The New Republic, The New Yorker, The Paris Review, and Boulevard. He is co-editor of The Routledge Anthol ogy of Cross-Gendered Verse, and the North American editor for Who's Who in Twentieth Century Poetry. ♦ Melissa Bender, lecturer of English and coordinator of women's/gender studies will read from her short sto semesters. Atil emigrated to the United States in 1971 and has lived in Erie since 1992. Her first novel, On Free dom Street, was published by Lynx House Press in 1991, and her second novel, Waiting for America, will be published later this year. Students at all Penn State locations are invited to participate in the four week, four-credit course offered in Trier, Germany by Behrend. The pro gram, under the direction of Dr. Stephen deHart, associate professor of German and humanities, is offered May 13-June 11 by the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Penn State-Behrend. Deadline for application is February 13. Trier was founded in 16 B.C. during the rule of Emperor Augustus, and many of the buildings from the Roman period still survive. Located in westernmost Germany, Trier is a short distance from Luxembourg, France, the Neth erlands, and Belgium. It is located in the Moselle Valley, one of Germany's premier wine-producing regions. Named Europe's "Cultural City" in 1995, Trier attracts about 3.5 million tourists annually. In addition to travel, participants in the Trier pro gram will be able to take one of the following Penn State for-credit courses: intermediate German, Ger man conversation and composition, international business (graduate level), or independent study in Ger many. Sertima's presentation, "Blacks in Science: Ancient and Mod ern," will explore the expanding awareness of African science before the discovery of the Americas.
