Lady spikers split pair by Dylan Stewart Collegian Staff The Penn-State Behrend women's volleyball team bounced back after several losses, with a big win at home last Thursday against Fredonia. The Lady Lions took the match with scores of 16-14. 11-15, 15- 12.17-15. Head coach Cindy Jacobelli said that the team was "surprised of Fredonia," as Fredonia played much better than they had at the Courtland tournament earlier in the month. "It was a big match for us". Jacobelli said. "We had' fight. and come back In several of the games." The offense was led by Erin McCormick and Heather Learch, who finished with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. Take a breather. "Angela Traistex had five big digs for us, which all came in crucial phases of the game," said Jacobelli. Other standout's on the day included Mary Good with 13 digs, and Angie Georg with 41 assists. The Lady Lions traveled to Allegheny on Tuesday, where they did not have as much success. The Lady Spikers came out strong and won the first game 15- 11. They then proceeded to drop the next three, 12-15. 9-15 and 5- 15. k "We came out like a house on fire". said Jacobelli. "We just seemed to let up after we lost the second game. Allegheny is a very strong team. I think that we are coming closer to beating them every year." by Mau Plizga Sports Editor The Lady Lions defeated Kueka on Saturday to earn en important non-conference victory. Although Kueka is not in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference the win had special meaning for Behrend. "It was a big win for us because it is the first time we have beaten them. It was also their homecoming which made the win more enjoyable for us," said senior Lace Herrmann. I was really happy to contribute... Cummings Behrend scored the lames only goal in the fifty-rust minute of action on the header by freshman Beth Cummings. One reason for the lack of scoring was the tremendous play of goalie Mary Ann Rupp. Rupp earned the shut-out by racking up 12 saves for the Lady Lions. "This is one of our best wins because they had no respect fix us. We showed them that we can compete at their level." said Rupp. Senior captain Angie Georg had similar thoughts on the defeat. "We came out strong, and then just let up. We are a strong team with a lot of talent, we just need to learn to put everything together each and every night," she said. Erin McCormick, Amy Good and Beth Calhoun led the way with 9 kills each in the defeat. McCormick also had 3 blocks on the day. Heather Lerch and Angie Georg excelled in the service game with 4 and 3 service aces in the contest. The loss at Allegheny drops the team record to 6-7. .The Lady Lions will next be in action this weekend at the Gettysburg Tournament. The Lady Lions return to Behrend for their home tournament.
