A romance film about love, family, and fate, the film is mixed with traces of comedy here and there A Mexican woman, played by Salma Hayek, and a white New Yorker, played by Matthew Perry, meet in line at a Las Vegas restroom. The woman, Isabella, is a strong believer in simple signs of fate and destiny presented in everyday situations. An example of this is Isabella believing that her and the man, Alex, meet in line because of fate, and for a specific reason. After their informal introduction and conversation about signs and fate, they end up together in a one night affair. The next morning she quietly leaves while Alex is still sleeping. They go on in their lives and never contact each other. Alex continues working at a temporary job in Las Vegas, when unexpectedly, Isabella visits him three months later. She had a very surprising message to relay to him, "Pregnancy => his. This creates conflict and problems among the two, which becomes the main focus of the story. Warm weather is here by Sheila L. Bickel Entertainment Editor Well the warm weather is upon us (atleast for now) and the spring activities are starting to occur. Here are just a few suggestions for you to try. I've said it before and I'll say it again...Go for a drive. I can't speak enough about the wonderful stress relief that happens after a drive. It can be an individual or group activity, anytime, anywhere. Trust me. You have also probably already GEORGE by MARK SZORADY Alex wants to help with the ktby and they end up as a couple. Ilowever, there is debate about the true reason that they are together: "Fate or the baby?" Besides this, their families and cultures clash because each family has opposing beliefs about religion, customs, values and general viewpoints. Once the eager couple finally overcomes the problem of their families disagreeing, then personal problems arise between the two. The fetus's life is held at risk of abortion, along with the couple's future together. Their relationship faces specific problems that cause Isabella to suddenly think that tate never really existed in the first place and she is crushed. Throughout the entire movie, Isabella and Alex both struggle with the ideas of marriage, family, cultures, fate and of course, true love. I think this is a good fantasy love story, and not something you would want to see if you are having relationship troubles. Almost everything turns out positive with the classic fairy-tale ending. I give this movie a thumbs up from a woman's point of view for the story itself, but a thumhs down as far as reality and men are concerned. It is a living in a dream world noticed some other fun things going on. Walking to class, you can see fellow classmates hacking, playing catch, shooting hoops, or just enjoying the outside atmosphere. Who wants to be cooped up inside the prison like dorm rooms for months? Go outside and get some fresh air. Another great suggestion is the beach. I know it is still a little too cold for laying out or swimming but the beach has that beautiful scenery to take advantage of. Go just to take a break or do some thinking. HRIFTY SHOPPE Entert. inm kind of story. Some things seem too far fetched to actually he true. Nobody has the luck, or fate I should say, of having a one night stand after a two minute introduction, then by fate, are brought hack together because of pregnancy. Plus, judging by the major disputes in the beginning about cultural differences, the way the opposing families so quickly accept the couple and their pregnancy would not actually happen in real life. This is a good romance story as long as it is depicted as fictional. There are some interesting views and ideas presented in this movie. I was somewhat intrigued by the idea of there being signs of destiny in our everyday lives. I believe that unlike the overall story, this has some truth to it. The message is that everything in life happens for a reason. You can follow your destiny by paying close attention to detailed clues or signs around you, for they will lead you in the right direction that life has already planned or fated for you. Who knows, it may he fate for you to go and watch Fools Rush In because you read this article. It has been rated PG-13, but should he G for general audience. There is no violence or nudity, and there are only a few kissing scenes. But give it a try anyway. What about the gorge? (No, not the cafe in Reed....but the mini Grand Canyon behind the apartments.) Put on your boots and take a hike. Yeah...it may be a little muddy right now but be thankful that it's mud and not Regardless of what you do, do it outside. Behrend has a lot to offer if you only look for it. And as all of us know the weather can change on a dime, so enjoy while it is here. LEAVING NE WV 7 4 3f79 . Of THE Critic's Corner by Michael Greene Portrait Of A Lady It can't be easy to be a woman in the last century when Queen Victoria held the throne of England. Women were literally chattels of their husbands, bought and bartered for appropriately if they were of the "upper crust" of society. wealth didn't matter anyway, since the men held the purse strings. In this adaptation of Henry James' novel, Nicole Kidman portrays Isabel Archer, the heroine. Isabel is an American woman, no doubt influenced by the likes of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan IL Anthony. She's a free thinker, reflective of those women. An expatriate in Europe, she finds it difficult to fit into that continent's more rigid view of a "woman's elace." I PREFER TO THINK OF IT AS MOMENTARILY DEFYING GRAVITY! Isabel lives with relatives on their country estate in England. In those days, a marriage proposal from a "proper" match was viewed as a woman's dream come true. However, Isabel will have none of it. She turns down such a proposal in favor of some "free time" to experience the world. Alas and alack, our heroine hasn't the funds for such adventures, so what to do? Cousin Ralph (Martin Donovan), an admirer of the headstrong young woman, comes to the rescue. He convinces his dying father to leave his wealth to Isabel. This world seems to answer to a prayer. However, the money serves to further complicate matters for Isabel. D, tIcX • , 4109 )\ e A.).3 Do you Kt.,...) 114 AT 1411704'S TIT IS \ I WITE..D youß • MoM. Madame Merle (Barbara Hershey) sets her sights on the fortune, as does her ally, Gilbert (John Malkovich), who sets out to win the young woman's heart (and thus her money). The story itself is fine and the screen adaptation is well written. However, the cinematography leaves a lot to be desired, being grainy and "camera-jerky." This is supposed to create some sort o authentic feel, but it doesn't work. The actors acquit themselves well, with the exception of Malkovich, who is so blatantly sleazy, 1 was reminded of Captain Hook in Pete Pan! All in all, I really can't give thi , flick anything more than a so-so nod. THANK YOU. GOD BLESS AMERICA. AND FREE SPEECH.
