Emick pours in 23 to lead Behrend

This week the men's basketball
team earned their tenth win of the
season positioning themselves for
an ECAC playoff spot.
A big contributer to their success
was the play of sophomore Brian
Emick, who earned Housing and
Food Service Athlete of the Week
honors.
His career high in points came
Monday night in the Lions 83-53
thumping of Bethany (W.V.)
College.
"I was happy to see Brian score a
career high 23 points (vs. Bethany).
He works harder than anyone on
the team in practice and deserves to
play well," said teammate Steve
Hout.
"Brian hit a few shots that
boosted his confidence. Hopefully
he can use this as a springboard to
finish the year strong," said Coach
Dave Niland.
Emick combined solid outside
shooting and a basket attacking
style to piece together his career's
best performance. He canned four
three pointers while making eight
of his thirteen shot attempts.
"Brian really came out of his
shooting slump (Monday). We
were happy to see that," said
Niland.
"Brian really attacks the glass,
offensively and defensively from
the two guard position" said captain
Ron Derian.
For the year, Emick is the Lions'
second leading rebounder at 4.5 per
game. Monday he improved that
mark by grabbing six boards.

It's been an up and down year for
the Lions.
The Penn State Behrend Lions
finished the week at 1-1 dropping a
game to Keuka 73-62 before
stampeding the Bethany Bison 83-
53.
With only six games left in the
1996-97 campaign, the Lions sit
one game over .500 at 10-9.
On Saturday, the Lions played a
solid high-scoring first half to take
a 37-35 lead over Keuka.
Andy Lawrence had sixteen first
half points and Jason Paloskey
scored seven to lead Behrend to the
advantage.
"We played very well for the first
25 minutes," commented Heal

Over the last two games Emick
stepped up on the offensive end of
the floor. He has averaged 18
points per game, almost ten better
than his season average of 8.7 ppg.
He also shot 59 percent (13 for 22)
from the floor during that span.
Despite his recent success
offensively, defense and intensity
remain his specialties.
"Defensively he brings a lot of
energy and intensity. His biggest
asset as a player is his intensity,"
said Coach Niland.
Emick agreed, "I just try to go
out there and play hard and pick up
the intensity of the game."
"Brian deserves to have a good
night, he gives it up for the team
and works hard," said teammate
Jason Paloskey.
Emick's athleticism and
versatility are also important parts
of his game that allow him to excel.
"His athleticism and willingness
to sacrifice himself for the team
allows him to play several spots for
us," said Niland.
Throughout the year Emick has
played four positions for the Lions,
failing only to play point guard.
"Brian is really an unselfish kid,
which is the mark of a good player"
added Niland.
The Lions return to action Friday
night at eight o'clock. They will be
facing rival Waynesburg in a key
game with major influence on the
ECAC playoff picture.
"I think the team has a real good
shot at the playoffs. As long as we
continue to play hard everything
should fall into place," said Emick.
Coach Dave Niland. "We led by
six and then went through a cold
spell."
The cold spell devastated Behrend,
as they were outscored 38-25 in the
second stanza as Keuka beat
Behrend by 11 73-62.
Niland said Keuka's rebounding
was the reason for their success.
"We just couldn't keep them off the
boards. We'd stop them, but they
got second shots," he said
Lawrence was held to four points
in the second half as Behrend was 1
of 9 from downtown. Paloskey
finished with 15 and Brian Emick
had 13. Lawrence was high
rebounder with five.
"This was one we would like to
win, but we didn't play well
enough," said Niland

The men's basketball team
improved their record to 9-7 with a
win at Oberlin on Feb. 1.
Sophomore forward Andy
Lawrence received Housing and
Food Services Athlete of the Week
honors for his performance during
the week of Feb.l -Feb. 7.
"Andy brings a lot of athleticism
to the team. He is capable of doing
a lot of things," said team 'captain
Ron Derian.
"He is a very good natural
athlete" added Coach Dave Niland.
On Saturday Feb.l, Lawrence
knocked down four three pointers
while scoring 22 points to lead the
Lions to a 76-60 victory. The win
was Behrend's fifth in seven games.
Lawrence's play has been
particularly important to the Lions
with the recent injury to Derian.
"Since Ron (Derian) has gone
down, I have tried to pick up my
play," said Lawrence. He has done
just that.
Over the last two games
Lawrence is averaging 18.5 points
per game, shooting over 50 percent
from the floor.
"His skills have developed to the
point where he is on track to have a
very good year," said coach Niland.
This year, Lawrence has been a
force offensively for Behrend. He
is shooting over 50% from the floor
while leading the team with 15.6

He is shooting 43 percent on
three pointers while making 35
bombs. He is also draining almost
85 percent of his free throws.
"A.L. has a natural instinct for
the game. He is a great offensive
player as well as a defensive one,"
said teammate Steve Hout.
Lawrence is second on the team
in both blocked shots and steals.
Not only is he an offensive power,
but he also usually guards the
opposing team's top player.
"A.L. is one of the hardest
working players on the team; if he
keeps it up he will he an All-
American by his senior year," said
sophomore Brian Emick.
"He is a very
good, natural
athlete"
-- Coach Niland
Despite being a sophomore,
Lawrence has also played an
important role as a team leader.
"Andy leads in his own way. He
has the respect of his teammates,"
said Coach Niland.
"I just try to keep everybody
calm on the floor," Lawrence
added.
Lawrence and the rest of the
Lions return to action Friday night
when they conclude their three
game homestand against
Waynesburg. Tip-off is at 8:00
