Page 12 - The Behrend College Collegian Thursday, January 30, /997 Lady Lions win two straight behind Schultz and Marin by Matt Plizga Sports Editor Now that the Collegian's hack in publication, all of those students too lazy to make their way to Erie Hall can see how the Lady Lions (5-10) basketball team is performing. Coach Fornari's ladies opened last week with an impressive 66-42 win over Laßoche on Tuesday. They continued their winning ways the following Saturday with a 61- 48 performance at the University of Pitt-Bradford. "We have come out ready to play. Attacking on both ends of the floor at the beginning of each halt"' said Coach Fornari. Behrend's attacking style has allowed them to force 56 turnovers in the past two games which led to several fast-break buckets. The key to Saturday's win over the Panthers seemed to be defense. The Lady Lions not only forced 30 turnover but they held Pitt- Bradford to 32 percent shooting from the floor. The first half started in fine fashion for Behrend as they limited Bradford to 16 points while holding them to 22 percent shooting from the floor. After 20 minutes the Lady Lions held a 27-16 lead. "We've been playing with a lot more confidence and are starting to pull together as a team" said freshman guard Tiffany Buck. Sports Quiz by Larry Duncan 1. Junior co captain Emily Marini contributed 7 boards to along with her 10 points. "Our freshman guards were able to handle the ball and put pressure on the ball defensively" said Fornari. The freshman backcourt of Carrie Nestor and Tiffany Buck grabbed 15 of the teams 23 steals. Nestor had nine thefts while Buck and Marini added six apiece. Not only were the Lady Lions hard at work on the defensive end, they were also scorching the nets offensively. On the night they shot 47 percent from the field including a sizzling 58 percent in the second half. "We ran the floor well and applied good defensive pressure" said Marini on the team's win. Packers beat Patriots behind special teams play by Matt Plizga Sports Editor Finally I Super Bowl that I could watch! This year's battle was absent of most of the things that I hate about the NFL championship game. I didn't have to watch Pittsburgh's beloved Steelers blow another title. I didn't even have to watch 'or listen to the announcers glorify "prostitute buying drug using wide receivers." Absent from this year's Super Bowl were all the teams I'm tired of seeing on Super Sunday. Gone were the injury riddled 49ers and the parole ridden, egomaniacs from Dallas. Despite all the negative aspects of the Super Bowl that were not present, some still remained. I still had to watch a boring, endless pre-game show that would have put me to sleep if everyone else wasn't snoring so loud. According to the team patience is the key to victory. "We've stayed patient and ran our offense. As long as we execute and stay patient we're fine" added Nestor. Marini also led Behrend with 10 boards as Laßoche was outrebounded 50-37. Junior Nikki Schultz added eight rebounds and 12 points for the winners. "Just like any other freshman, they're going to make errors but now they are playing better more often than not" said Coach Fornari. "Coach hasn't given up on us. She has kept coaching and shown us how confidant she is in our abilities" added Tiffany Buck. Behrend was shooting for its third consecutive win Wednesday night when they faced Westminster College (3-13). "They have played a huge Division II schedule, they are a lot better than their record" said Fornari of Westminster. Statistics from the game were unavailable as the Collegian went to press before the completion of the game. The next opportunity to see the emerging Lady Lions in action will be this Saturday when they take on the Storm from Lake Erie College. The only good part of the extended pre-game and halftime celebrations was watching the elaborate commercial campaigning. I give the Budweiser commercials two thumbs up, while Pepsi only got one. Pepsi should have stuck with the Star Wars and dancing bear adds and left out all the other GeneratioNext crap. Entering Super Sunday I was excited about the prospect of watching two of the top young quarterbacks in the NFL do battle. This year's Super Bowl was sure to better than the past five or 10. Maybe Super Bowl XXXI would even be exciting enough to keep me awake. The first quarter opened with some exciting action that made this year's Super Bowl look like an actual game. After stopping the Patriots in the game's opening drive Green Bay spent little time jumping ahead. Desmond Howard returned a Tom Tupa punt in electrifying fashion giving the Packers excellent field position. Two plays later Brett Favre found a wide open Andre Rison for a 54 yard touchdown reception. On the Patriots' ensuing drive Drew Bledsoe threw an interception that led to a Chris Jacke field goal. Bledsoe would settle down later in the first to throw two short TD passes for a 14-10 lead after one. The second quarter was all Green Bay as they rattled off 17 unanswered points. During this run, Favre found Antonio Freeman for a Super Bowl record 81 yard touchdown catch. After another Jacke field goal, Favre dove into the corner of the end zone to give the Pack a 27-14 halftime lead. The second half opened pretty slowly compared to the first after the long halftime show. Both teams struggled moving the ball until late in the third quarter. The Pats' gained momentum and closed the score to 27-21, on a Curtis Martin TD run. The cheese-heads took the air out of New England on the ensuing kick-off. Desmond Howard broke his second record of the night by returning the kick-off 99 yards for a touchdown. That night Howard broke three records and became the first special teams player to be 4.7"1?; ' !kW named Super Bowl MVP. A two point conversion pushed the score back to a 14 point spread and all but ended what was a good Super Bowl. The fourth quarter was uneventful and rather boring. Not only did the scoring stop but I was forced to watch Pepsi commercials at every intermission. The highlight of the fourth quarter was watching the Budweiser Cavemen commercials and thinking about how many people lost money on the 14 point spread. Yet again the AFC lost another Super Bowl, their hundredth in a row or something like that. This year's Super Bowl was a little better than the last few, but it was still missing the exciting finish that football fans love the most. All those gambling football fans had to love the fact that the Packers had a chance to cover the spread by kicking a field goal, but they missed one and chose not to kick another at the end of the game. For all of you football gamblers who now feel lost without a way to lose your paycheck, don't forget about college basketball and the fast approaching March Madness.
