Indian All-Star rightfiekier Albert Belle signed with the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday. Belle's contact of $55 million over ten years makes him the highest paid player in baseball. The contract also includes a clause that will keep Belle among the three highest paid players in the game The Tribe trained to retain their slugger with an offer of $4O million over five years, but that just wasn't enough for Belle. Despite all the money being thrown Belle's way, he still insisted his decision was not based on money. Over the past two years Belle has been one of the hottest hitters in the game. He has hit 98 homers and driven in 274 runs during the '95 and '96 seasons combined. Olajuwon hospitalized! Houston Rocket center Hakeem Olajuwon spent Tuesday night in a Houston hospital after experiencing an irregular heartbeat. The All-Star center was taken to the hospital at halftime of the Rockets 122-93 thrashing of the Minnesota Timberwolves. Olajuwon was diagnosed with atrail fibrilation. It was the second time in 5 years that Olajuwon has been hospitalized with atrial fibrilation. Last time he was hospitalized for five days and missed seven games. He is currently listed as day-to-day on the Rocket's injury list. Packers sign Mon! Depleted by several injuries to their receiving core the Green Bay Packers picked up former Pro-Bowl receiver Andre Rison. Rison was claimed on waivers from the Jacksonville Jaguars just one day after his release. On the year, Rison had just 34 receptions for 458 yards, a far cry from his 90 reception seasons with the Falcons. The Packers hope the presence of Rison will give quarterback Brett Favre a go to man, after losing Robert Brooks, Antonio Freeman and Mark Chmura to injuries this season. Buckridgc (6.9 ppg and 6.6 rpg), will not return to the squad this Hudson will he one of only two seniors on the team this year. The other is Katie Falloon who averaged 2.7 ppg and 2.4 rpg last year. Also returning from last year are centers Missy Gon and Jennifer Brayer, who saw considerable playing time last year. Head to head the Lady Lions demolished FSU last year on back to back meetings. They won 76-62 on December 8 and 76-48 on January 10. "We need to do our things to win," commented Behrend Head Coach Roz Fornari. "We need to execute the offense and keep them off the hoards. They like to run the ball and they'll do anything to beat (us)." Salisbury State will enter Erie Hall after an impressive year last year in which they went 19-9 including an outstanding 11-3 in the Capital Athletic Conference. The Sea Gulls return four starters from last year's team which advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division HI Tournament. With the nineteen win season last year they finished second in the CAC to Marymount College. The Sea Gulls will have some work to do to fill the vacancy left by the graduation of last year's leading scorer and rebounder Amy Fenzel who was first team all conference and all-region last year. The Gulls will return four starters highlighted by 5'3" senior Dominique Lisa who shoots more like Dominique Wilkins scoring 11.4 ppg while dishing out 5.5 apg. Lisa led the team in assists and finished second behind Fenzel in scoring. Also returning are sophomore guard Amy Cooke (9.0 ppg and 5.3 apg), sophomore forward Maisha Ellis (8.6 ppg and 7.4 rpg) and 5'10" sophomore center Nakihah Baskerville (5.7 ppg and 7.5 rpg). Salisbury State will be under the direction of seventh year head coach Bridget Benshetler and will play Defiance College who beat them last year in the NCAA second round action 94-64 in front of 1,500 fans. Salisbury State will have to get the edge early. They were 15-2 when leading at the half, but only 4-7 when trailing. "They lost some key starters, but of the teams they are similar to us because they are very young and athletic," said Fornari of SSU. The Behrend basketball season tipped-off the winter season last Saturday in an exciting night of three-pointers, prizes and dunks. Make that missed dunks. A large contingent of fans, friends and family came out to Fan Jam for the chance to see the 1996- 97 version of Behrend basketball and have the opportunity to win a wide variety of prizes. "1 thought there was a very good turnout. It was fun playing in front of a large crowd of people" said Lady Lions co-captain Nikki Schultz. "It was nice to see local people come out to support Behrend athletics." The night opened with a twenty minute women's intra-squad scrimmage. The women's game featured coach Roz Fornari's large recruiting class and the variety of skills they bring to the court. Following the game there was a shoot-off for NFL tickets and a $lOO gift certificate for the Penn State Behrend Bookstore. Several people stepped up to the foul line in an attempt to win the NFL tickets before a young fan nailed the foul shot to claim the tickets. Three starters will return including 5'4" senior guard Emili McCluer who started all 29 games last year. She averaged 7.2 ppg and 3.28 rpg. Also returning are Shauna Graber (7.5 and 2.7) and Stephanie Nafziger (10.4 and 7.2). They will however be without Amy Flory and Jenny Brown who scored 29.3 ppg last year together. "Defiance is very strong," said Fornari. "They're a running, pressing team." Look for Defiance to open up a big first half lead against Salisbury State and coast to a double figure victory. SSU will whip FSU in the consolation game and the Lady Lions will play Defiance in the championship. Good Luck to the Lady Lions in a tough tournament. The Lions open their season with the Hamot Classic Tournament this weekend. Invited to the tournament are Alma College, Hilbert College, and Wesley College. The Lions will open against Hilbert. "It's another good tournament year," commented Head Coach of the Lions Dave Niland. "It's traditionally a strong tournament." Hilbert will be ready to take on the Lions in the first game. Led by second year head coach Jim Daley, Hilbert hopes to avoid another injury plagued season like last year. Daley's starting line-up is built around 6'S" senior forward Cecil Foster.
