The massacre occurred in Pittsburgh, where the Lady Lions competed in a quad event against Alfred University, Carnegie Melon, and Washington & Jefferson. Intramural Update by Mike Nies Collegian Staff Intramural football is showing a record turnout 44 teams entered for this year’s intramural football competition. The play-offs start on Sunday, October 27th. There should be some good competition since none of the teams seem to be dominating. Intramural sports are a great thing for the students here at Penn State-Behrend. It gives the students a chance to meet new people and learn how to use teamwork to overcome their adversaries. “Intramurals allows me to play a sport without committing a lot of time to it” said intramural activist Wade Sander. Koster leads golfers by Matt Plizga Sports Editor Behrend senior Dave Koster became the first Behrend golfer to advance to the East Coast Athletic Conference open championships, ever. His round of 77, at the ECAC qualifier, enabled him to compete in open championship. Which was held at Kings Creek Country Club in Rehobith Beach, Delaware on October 14th and 15lh. "It was a good experience. There were a lot of good teams and competition" said Koster. "I competed against Ivy League schools like Harvard and Penn" Koster added. Koster finished in the middle of the pack with rounds of 83 and 80. Out of the 115 golfers participating, Koster finished 50th at the ECAC championships. His scores at the difficult Kings Creek Country Club were his first rounds over 80 this fall. I hit the ball well, but I just couldn't make my putts" said Koster. "The course was the hardest I've ever played at. It was also one of the nicest" Koster said. got off to a slow start, dropping the first two sets. But, in the third set, CMU heard the Lion's Roar. Behrend won the final three sets to dispose of the Melonheads 15-6, 15-11,15-13. Angie Georg said the team won because it wouldn’t give up, "this team just refuses to give in. We have a strong drive to win.” Against CMU, Angie had her “We crushed them! I really had fun playing this weekend. ” best game ever as a setter. She set up the swingers for 50 successful kills. Other offensive standouts included: Erin McCormick, 23 kills; Amy Good, 16 kills; and Heather Lerch, 22 digs. The next victim for the Lady Lions was Alfred University. A match that turned out to be Georg's match. She finished the match with 38 assists, which put her into the Behrend record books and earned her the Athlete of the Week award. She set new precedents in career assists and assists in a season. The rest of the team also performed well in defeating Alfred (9-17). The grueling match went to five sets, 15-4, 15-8, 11-15, 15-17, 15-12. _ “The intramurals provide students with an outlet for physical activity and a chance to have fun at the same time,” said Rob Wittman, head of the Intramural Program. Intramural competitor Ed Fatula agreed. “Intramurals enables the average student, who does not wish to put the full time and effort into sports, to play competitively at the college level” Fatula said. Wittman’s goal is to get as many students involved as possible. It looks like Wittman is achieving his goal. Since August 1991, when the Intramural program started, they have grown larger each year, with this years turnout being the largest ever. “It gives me a stress reliever from college life” said intramural enthusiast Jason “Chief’ Thomas. On the first day he opened five over par after four holes before recovering to shoot a three over 39 on the back nine. “It was a good experience. There were a lot of good teams in competition.” •Dave Koster, golfer Roster's second day started much the same as.he was four over after three holes of play, but again he recovered to fire a 39 on the back nine. "The slow start both days hurt my score, it was frustrating getting off to a slow start" said Koster. On the year, Koster averaged just 77 strokes per round and finished first in two tournaments. Coach Gregory said, "We refused to give in, we just kept battling until the match was ours." Georg added, "We executed really well, our passing, hitting, and serving were great." Amy Good and Beth Calhoun used Georg's sets to the fullest in recording 10 kills each. Heather Lerch slapped some nasty serves; four of them finding wood. Angie Georg The last and biggest game of the weekend ended up being the easiest for the Lady Lions. The opponent was rival volleybally powerhouse Washington and Jefferson University (24-6). Amy Beckner said of the magnitude of the matchup, "W&J is one of our big rivals and we really wanted to stick it to them." This was a rematch and last lime the teams faced off, Washington & Jefferson came out on top. After all the hype, this match proved to be a complete mismatch. The Lady Lions sent W&J home in 3 straight sets, 15-4,15-9,15-8. Coach Gregory said, "We entered the match feeling like we had The points race of the intramural competition is off to a fast and furious start. KDR, Sig Tau and TKE all sit atop the fraternity division. KDR is paired with Theta Phi in the co-ed division where they are tied for the lead with Avalanche. The Crazy Bananas are running away with the women’s division, as are Perry 2nd (Resident Hall) and Marbles (Independent) in their respective divisions. Don’t forget the deadline for Intramural Billiards is Friday, Oct. 25th, at 4:00 p.m. The sign up sheet is in the intramural office, entry fee is $2.00 and a one time fee of $3.00 to help with the cost of rentins time on the pool tables. One of his first place finishes came at the Pitt-Bradford tournament when he led the Behrend golf teams to one their most impressive wins in recent history. Roster’s accomplishments include a hoie-in-one at the Edinboro Invitational, where he also earned low medalist honors by shooting a 71. Koster and the rest of the Behrend golf team will have to opportunity to build on their fall success when their season continues this spring. Georg named ATW Angie Georg, a grad from Windber High School, was named this week’s Housing and Food Service Athlete of the Week when she set her way into Penn State-Behrend’s volleyball reconi books. Georg broke Pam Allshouse’s career assist record while setting an all time record for most assists in a season. “The whole team is very glad that Angie broke the assist record” said Coach Sharon Gregory. “It could not of happened to a better player, she is a good team player and she leads by example on and off the court.” Georg has been the starting setter for the past three years in addition to being a returning team captain. “Angie is an excellant motivator and she helps her teammates every chance she gets. ’ "Angie is a very good player and shows a lot of leadership on and off the court” said teammate Amy Beckner. Coach Gregory said a lot of Georg’s excellance comes from her on-court offense. “She does an excellant job running the offense on the court” said Gregory. “She is extremely focussed on what needs to be done on and off the court as a team player. She brings the whole team together” added Coach Gregory. Everybody on the team is passing great, setting well and hitting the ball hard,” The women will next play at Grove City.
