sage 10 Matson mashing way to ATW by Matt Plizga Collegian Staff "John Matson has really given us a top notch performance," coach Paul Benim says of this week's Housing and Food Service Athlete of the Week. The sophomore third baseman has performed tremendously both in the field and with a bat in his hands. Matson leads the Behrend Lions with a batting average of Men finish third of eight at W & J Even though it has snowed again this week, the Penn State- Behrend golf team managed to squeak in a tournament last Monday. The six member club finished third in the Washington and Jefferson Tournament. The host Presidents won the tournament with an overall score of 413. Carnegie Mellon came in second at 418 and Behrend finished in third with a score of 433. Dave Koster was the medal finisher for Behrend with a round of 76. Koster's round was highlighted with an eagle on hole number 12. Bill Grady had the second lowest score for Behrend with an 85. Chris Donalies shot an 86, Heath Poutius and Brian Shellato each shot a 93. Coach Herb Lauffer felt the effort was there on the part of his team. "They certainly all tried to play their best, but they know they're not satisfied with their overall rounds either. They want to get better," Lauffer said. Lauffer felt the course in Washington, Pa. was in good shape for the weather. The most groomed areas of the course, the greens, were in decent shape as well. "They had cut the green a couple of times before the tournament. So there was some variance in speed [of the greens], but overall they we're pretty consistent." The tournament last Monday was just the second of the year because of the horrible weather. "The weather has just hung on. The guys will tell you that they have not been hitting enough. The weather conditions have just played havoc in trying to get the schedule put together," explained Lauffcr. Behrend hopes to play at the Greenville Country Club today against Thiel and Grove City. That is, weather permitting. c:4 1 ) . 1%..„ .402 and is one behind the team lead in hits (35), runs batted in (21), and runs scored (22). "John is a great hitter. Not many pitchers have been able to get him out this year. He never gets cheated, he hits the ball hard each time," stated teammate Marc Burchanowski. "Matson hits for average and drives in runs, he hits the ball hard to all fields," said assistant coach Bill Graham. "I try to put the ball in play each time up. I want to drive it hard and force the other team to make a play," states Matson. He has done just that, striking out only five times in 87 plate appearances. Coach Graham As the end of the school year draws to a close, so does the intramural season. The winners of each division are beginning to emerge with only soccer playoffs, modified softball, and badminton left. Kappa Delta Rho is almost guaranteed to take the fraternity title for the third year in a row. KDR's feel that this was perhaps the most competitive season yet, but expressed that a team effort was the greatest strength in accomplishing the common goal. Ilia Belkin, intramural chair for KDR, stated, "One of the hardest things to do is to defend the title. But my brothers came through in a big way." This was definitely the case for volleyball in which KDR was victorious. "Our team this year decided that our goal was not only to get to the finals but to win," said Steve Jecker, member of the KDR volleyball squad. But it was not an easy task to come out on top. Delta Chi's stood in their way and would not easily be defeated. Dave Stoehr, a member of the Delta Chi team, said, "We went three games with them [KDII]. It was the best volleyball we played. It was good for two teams of equal strength to play a competitive game." -- Lp ,l,;,liiii sA7LEsit „,D,%,i:::&„.i„i.„:„!:„m.: „,,„A::,„,,m.,, - - MONDAY APRIL 22 &TUESDAY APRIL 23 Sports KDR closing by Sheila Bickel Photo Editor WP SE agrees "John is a contact hitter.
