Thursday, March 21, 1996 On our mind... by Nick Zulovich & Julie Stocker Sports & Assistant Sports Editors `Notes on probation: Tuesday the NCAA placed the Florida State Seminoles on probation for one year. The reason for the probation was failing to monitor and investigate rules violations by its players at FSU. The Seminoles who have been one of the top ten programs in the country. Florida State could lose thousands of dollars by not able to attend a top notch bowl game next season. Hoops Hoops and more hoops: Tonight starts NCAA Men's regional semifinals. In the east region, number one seed UMass is up against the lowest seed left in the tournament, Arkansas. The Razorbacks, the number twelve seed, easily defeated Penn State and Marquette in the first two rounds. UMass's only tough game so far was in the second round against Stanford. Look for UMass to get quite a game against Nolan Richardson's club, but the Minutemen should move on to meet the winner of Georgetown and Texas Tech. The Red Raiders who have just one loss on the season, proved the doubters wrong by advancing to the sweet 16. But defeating Allen Iverson and Georgetown will be a tall order. Also tonight in the Midwest region, top seed Kentucky takes on the Running Utes of Utah. Rick Pitino's Wildcats are expected to win it all, but Rick Majerus' Utah club could pull a surprise. With center Tim Duncan not playing at full strength, the Demon Deacons pulled out a 65-62 win over Texas to advance to the regional semi-final. The Cardinals defeated Big Fast powerhouse Villanova to give Denny Crum's team its second straight sweet sixteen appearence. Louisville out of Conference USA, have the personel to defeat Wake. The Cardinals have both an inside presence with Samaki Walker, and an outside shooter with DeJuan Wheat. Look for Louisville to surprise. And now I'll throw it down to Stocker's computer... Mississippi State who? Sure you may never think of this squad as an Elite Eight team, but the Bulldogs are one win away from turning heads. This is a group of athletes. At all times, there are five athletes on the floor. The fact That they are seven-point underdogs to UCONN makes me wonder what these sports writers are watching. Since Memphis was my surprise team that would make the Final Four, I'll go out on another limb and say Miss. St. will be a member of the Elite Eight. Cincinnati vs. Georgia Tech. Hmm. This game features a mere one-point victory for the Bearcats. I will strongly disagree by saying the Cincy Bearcats will claw their way to a double-digit win. Tech has underachieved this year, as well as being very inconsistent. Danny Fortson will dominate; in fact, I see a triple iouble. In summary, what's a tournament without Princeton or Santa Clara? That's exactly what the men's club volleyball team did this past weekend, when they defeated Grove City and John Carroll. With the sweep on their own home floor, Behrend improved to 8-3 on the season. According to Stoehr, the Grove City win was especially sweet. "We played really tough against Grove City; probably because they [Grove City] beat us earlier in the yeas." The Lions qualified for the post season by winning their section. Stoehr said only fate will tell who finishes behind them. If Behrend is at the top of their game during the playoffs and finishes in the top two, the team will advance to the Eastern Coast Championships in Maryland. In order to do that, the offense will have to continue to sparkle like it did this past weekend. "The offense was very consistent," commented Stoehr. "We worked on eliminating stupid errors." "Scott Horning is an incredible setter and did a good job running the offense," continued Stoehr. "Aaron Shick and Ken Fierle hit really well out of the middle." March 31, the Lions will travel to lUP. If they do well, they will call mom for more money and continue their journey to Maryland. Page II
