The game was only close when it was 0-0. Behind early hot shooting by Becky Reed who had 10 of her 17 points in the first half the Lady Lions took a 38-25 half time lead. "I wanted Mel in a position to score this year,” commented Lady Lion Head Coach Rosalyn Fomari. "She's the player we want to score a lot (and in this game) she wanted to score a lot." Melanie Banas continued her hot shooting with 15 points (5- 10 from outside the three point arc) for the game. Kate Delaney, Erin McCormick, and Marlesse Schlott dropped in seven points a piece. The trio also had 31 boards, seven, six, and 18 respectively to help the Lady Lions dominate the boards by a 51-36 margin. They also had a 20-7 offensive board margin. Next up for the Lady Lions was a rematch against a Grove City team that had shocked the Lady Lions in early January. "We were flat last time," | MARINI () f II ( i R I Snorts commented Fomari. "We were also very timid. We didn't work well together. This game was a turn around." Indeed a turn around of drastic proportions. Banas was on fire in the first half scoring all 20 of her points in the first 18 minutes. She was 8-12 from the floor including 4-5 from three point range. In the second half, the Lady Lions kept up the hot shooting (45 percent from the floor, 89 percent from the line) en route to five players scoring in double digets and a 73-49 trouncing of the Lady Wolverines. Both Marini and Schlott finished with 14 points and eight rebounds apiece. Reed added 10 points and Schultz six rebounds. Fomari was ectstatic with her team's play, "The big difference in the game was that we ran them all over the court. We shot better and we had a lot more offensive rebounds. We made them turn very defensive and we beat them." Then on Monday, the Lady Lions ran the streak to six by beating the Lady Cats of Pilt- Bradford 67-49. The Lady Lions once again had a great first half despite starting slow and led 33- 18 at the first half intermission. "We came out dead in the early first half, but our defense really picked it up from there," said Fomari. "We got up the floor better, and we had a lot of fast breaks. Reed beat them in transition on over 10 first half fast breaks. We were able to execute perfectly and Banas had two big threes.” Schlott led all scorers with 19 points and 12 rebounds. Coach Fomari talked later about the key to the victory. "Reed had their best guards and held them to half their average. Schlott and Marini did the same with their posts. Marini has been unbelievable. She’s been able to benefit from the other teams doubling up on Reed and Schlott." On the winning streak Fomari simply says, "It took us a long time to determine what we needed to do to win. Now, we’re more comfortable together offensively and defensively. We know what we need to do to win and we’re doing it well." The Lady Lions look to extend the streak to seven tonight as they host Hilbert in Erie Hall. Saturday, in addition to being the Lady Lions last home game against Keuka, is senior night honoring Schlott and Reed. one on Your Guest Check* R ITEMS ROAD IM'“ PI NINSUI A) Page 11
