Page 10 Lions by Brian Harkins Collegian Staff Yesterday, the Behrend men’s soccer team fought a rigorous battle against Carnegie Mellon only to lose by a score of 2-1. The Lions started in a hole by giving up a goal four minutes into the game. Kevin Rinehardt evened the score by slipping a penalty kick between the pipes in the 14th minute. Unfortunately, Carnegie Mellon came back and scored the game winner in the first half. When asked what the Lions need to improve on most, Ryan Schenck replied, “Putting the ball in the back of the net” Last Saturday, Behrend lost a close match to the seventh ranked team in the NCAA Division 111 Mid-Atlantic region, Washington and Jefferson College, by a final score of 2-1. Behrend decided to play three forwards in the first half in order to gain a strong offensive attack. This formation found success when co-captain Sean Blank scored the first goal of the match. Zulovich early start by Jennifer V. Colvin Editor in Chief Though most people usually wait to start their careers upon graduating from college, sophomore Nicholas Zulovich has gotten an early start. Zulovich has recently been hired by the Erie Panthers, Erie’s own hockey team, as Director of Media Relations. As the main contact between all media in Erie and the team, Zulovich is in charge of arranging press packets for all of the Panthers’ games. A press packet contains all current and up to date information about the team, a recap of the previous game, and any player information. Zulovich got the job through the work he did over the summer as an intern for the Panthers. “They liked what I did for the program [Face Off, the Panthers’ program] and so they asked if 1 would be interested, which I was, and they hired me,” said Zulovich. But it was not that easy. Zulovich spent the summer writing stories and stats for Face Off, the Panthers’ program for during games. However, W&J came out in the second half with offensive strategies of their own. With three forwards, Washington and Jefferson forced Behrend to pull one of their own forwards back on defense. Despite the positioning change made by Head Coach Perritano, Washington and Jefferson knotted up the score 1-1. “We had a mental breakdown,” said Blank after the W&J score. “We got down on ourselves when they scored.” Unfortunately for the Lions, they were down and stayed down as they watched Washington and Jefferson score another goal and pull into the lead. According to Dave Harrison, “They came back and scored two goals, and we just couldn’t get out of that little slump.” Field conditions also contributed to the Behrend loss. Coach Perritano claimed, “There were difficult field conditions at W&J. The field was very muddy.” The Panthers ready for a face off against Wheeling last Friday Manager Ron Hansis, Gary Thomas Vice-President and Lindenmuth Vice-President and Director of Sales, and Tom Director of Game Operations. The team came out strong and did so successfully, even though it was a different size field than they were used to playing on. “We came out with three forwards to dominate, and we played more direct balls,” said Blank. “We changed our play to accommodate the different field.” “The field conditions were terrible, but we dealt with them and we beat [Waynesburg],” said Harrison. The Lions put on a great offensive display against Waynesburg last Wednesday as Rinehardt, Harrison, Ryan Croyle, and Chris Heh each contributed a goal to Behrend’s victory. Ryan Ruta picked up three assists in the match. Backed by their strong offense, Behrend’s defense played well, and the Lions contained possession of the ball limiting the number of opposing shots. According to Harrison, “They didn’t get many shots on goal.” The Lions pulled together for their seventh win, all of which 5071 Peach St"!
